2026 FIFA World Cup: Clarke wary of Morocco test despite Scotland’s winning start

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has described Morocco as one of the toughest opponents his side will face in the group stage but believes Scotland can approach the contest with greater confidence after opening their World Cup campaign with victory.

The Scots ended a 36-year wait for a World Cup win by defeating Haiti 1-0 in their Group C opener, with John McGinn scoring the decisive goal in a hard-fought encounter.

The result lifted Scotland to the top of the group and eased some of the pressure ahead of crucial fixtures against Morocco and Haiti.

Speaking before the clash with the Atlas Lions, Clarke acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing his team.

“The next two matches against two teams among the top ten in the world will be difficult, but we will enter them with less pressure compared to how it was before the first game,” Clarke said.

The Scotland boss believes his side must build on the defensive resilience shown against Haiti while becoming more effective in possession.

“If we defend with the same solidity we showed against Haiti, maintain the same fighting spirit, and improve our performance on the ball to create more chances, then I think things will go well for us.”

Clarke also reflected on the significance of securing Scotland’s first World Cup victory in decades, admitting the achievement had special meaning after a lifetime in football.

“This shows how difficult it is for a country like Scotland to qualify for the World Cup and win matches in it. Sometimes I put a lot of pressure on myself, but when you are responsible for a group of players like this, you have to enjoy what you have.”

The 62-year-old revealed the emotional impact of finally reaching football’s biggest stage.

“I have never participated in a World Cup before. I waited 62 years to live this moment, and I have spent 44 years in football. For me, this is everything, as it has always been my dream to reach the World Cup with my country.”

Scotland will face Morocco on June 19 in Foxborough in what could prove decisive for qualification from Group C. The Atlas Lions, one of Africa’s leading contenders, are expected to provide a far sterner test than Haiti as both sides chase a place in the knockout rounds.
