The additional security presence came after large numbers of Algerian supporters gathered outside the team’s hotel to welcome the “Desert Warriors” as they arrived for the tournament in North America.
Algeria national football team landed in Kansas City early on Monday morning after travelling from Algeria, where the team had completed part of its preparations before heading to the United States.
According to reports, the squad arrived at Kansas City Airport at approximately 4:45am Algerian time and 10:45pm local time before travelling to their accommodation in the city.
The players, led by captain Riyad Mahrez, were welcomed enthusiastically by supporters gathered outside the team hotel.
Fans gather in large numbers
Video footage shared by Algerian outlet Dzair Tube showed extensive security measures surrounding the team’s residence at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Kansas City.
The security cordon was reportedly introduced after hundreds of fans assembled outside the hotel hoping to see the players, greet the squad and take photographs with them.
Supporters from the Algerian community living in Kansas City were joined by fans who had travelled from other American cities and states to welcome the national side before the start of the World Cup.
The atmosphere around the hotel reflected the excitement among Algerian supporters as the country prepares for its fifth appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
Many fans attempted to move closer to the players as they entered the hotel, while some reportedly tried to enter the building itself in the hope of meeting members of the squad.
Team officials decline requests politely
The supporters were particularly eager to meet Mahrez, one of the most recognisable figures in Algerian football and the team’s captain heading into the tournament.
However, officials accompanying the national team politely refused requests from fans seeking photographs and direct interaction with players.
The situation unfolded under the supervision of security personnel stationed both inside and outside the hotel.
Despite their disappointment, supporters reportedly reacted calmly and respectfully, understanding the security requirements surrounding the team ahead of a major international tournament.
The scenes nevertheless highlighted the strong emotional connection between the Algerian national side and its supporters abroad.
Algeria expected to enjoy strong support
The large turnout in Kansas City has increased expectations that Algeria will receive significant backing throughout the tournament from members of the Algerian diaspora across the United States.
Two of Algeria’s three group-stage matches are scheduled to take place in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium.
The “Desert Warriors” will face Argentina national football team and Austria national football team at the venue during the first and third rounds of Group 10.
Their second group-stage match against Jordan national football team will be played at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.
Focus shifts to preparations
Algeria arrived in the United States following a training camp in their home country and a friendly victory over the Netherlands, where the team continued preparations under coach Vladimir Petković.
The squad are expected to continue training immediately as they prepare for the start of the tournament.
