Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković is set to extend his stay in charge of the Desert Warriors, with an official announcement expected on Sunday.
The 62-year-old took over the Algerian national team on 29 February 2024 following the departure of Djamel Belmadi and has since overseen a period of rebuilding as the North African nation prepares for the 2026 World Cup.
According to reports, Petković has reached an agreement to prolong his contract, ensuring he remains at the helm for Algeria’s World Cup campaign next year.
The former Switzerland coach has guided Algeria through a promising transition since his appointment, helping the team regain stability after a disappointing early exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Under Petković, Algeria secured qualification for the expanded 48-team World Cup and will now turn their attention to preparations for the tournament, where they have been drawn in Group J alongside Argentina, Austria and Jordan.
The extension is seen as a vote of confidence in the Bosnian-born manager, who previously led Switzerland to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2020 and guided the nation to two FIFA World Cup appearances during a successful seven-year spell in charge.
Petković has also managed Italian clubs Lazio, Bologna and Sampdoria, winning the Coppa Italia with Lazio in 2013 before embarking on his international coaching career.
Algeria will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they reached the last 16 before being eliminated by eventual champions Germany after extra time.
Confirmation of Petković’s new deal is expected in the coming days, providing continuity for a side hoping to make a significant impact on the global stage in 2026.
