Riyad Mahrez has described fellow Algerian international Youcef Belaïli as an “incredible” player, while suggesting the winger could have enjoyed an even bigger career in European football under different circumstances.
Speaking during an interview on Koora Break alongside former Manchester United F.C. defender Rio Ferdinand, Mahrez praised Belaïli’s technical quality and natural ability, insisting he possessed the talent required to succeed at the highest level in Europe.
“He’s an incredible player,” Mahrez said, reflecting on the career of his international teammate.
The Algerian captain explained that certain decisions and moments earlier in Belaïli’s journey may have shaped a different path from many players who established themselves abroad at a younger age.
Mahrez suggested professionalism, timing and career management all played important roles in determining how Belaïli’s football story unfolded, despite the winger’s exceptional qualities on the ball.
The former Manchester City F.C. star also pointed to Belaïli spending a long period in Algerian domestic football before moving abroad, implying that remaining at home for so long may have limited some of the opportunities that could have emerged in Europe.
Despite that, Mahrez’s comments highlighted the enormous respect Belaïli still commands among fellow Algerian internationals.
Widely regarded as one of Algeria’s most naturally gifted attacking players, Belaïli has built a reputation for creativity, flair and technical brilliance throughout his career, even as inconsistency and off-field challenges occasionally affected his progress.
Mahrez’s remarks have reignited discussion among supporters over what Belaïli might have achieved had his career taken a different direction earlier on.
Still, the overall message from the interview was one of admiration, with Mahrez underlining that Belaïli’s talent remains unquestioned among players who have competed at the very highest level of world football.
