Ivorian striker Evann Guessand has made European football history after becoming the first player to win two different continental competitions in the same season.
The forward enjoyed success with both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace during an extraordinary campaign that saw him collect winners’ medals in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Guessand began the season with Aston Villa and played a role in the club’s Europa League campaign, featuring in several matches and scoring during the run to the title. Although he left the Midlands side during the winter transfer window, his contributions earlier in the competition ensured he remained eligible for a winners’ medal after Villa lifted the trophy.
The 24-year-old then moved on loan to Crystal Palace in January and quickly became part of another successful European journey.
After arriving at Selhurst Park, Guessand featured in Palace’s Conference League campaign and also found the net during the competition. The London side eventually secured the title, allowing the Ivory Coast international to complete a remarkable double that has never previously been achieved in European club football.
His achievement means he has become the first player ever to win two separate European competitions in a single season.
The feat has attracted attention across the football world because of its rarity and the unusual sequence of events that made it possible. In the space of only a few months, Guessand went from celebrating Europa League success with Aston Villa to sharing in Conference League glory with Crystal Palace.
The achievement capped what has already been described as one of the most memorable individual stories of the European football season.
With Aston Villa, Guessand contributed goals and appearances during the club’s victorious continental campaign before making the move to Palace midway through the season. His switch did not interrupt his involvement in European competition, and he went on to play another important role as the Eagles continued their own successful run in the Conference League.
By the end of the campaign, the striker had added two European trophies to his collection with two different English clubs.
Never before in the history of European competitions had such a scenario unfolded. The combination of appearances, goals and title-winning campaigns with two clubs has placed Guessand in a category of his own.
His remarkable season has now secured him a unique place in continental football history and provided one of the standout stories of the year in European competition.
