Sunderland target experienced Central African midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia

Central African Republic international Geoffrey Kondogbia could be heading to the Premier League this summer, with reports suggesting the experienced midfielder is close to reaching an agreement with Sunderland.

The 33-year-old, currently contracted to Olympique de Marseille until June 2027, is not expected to remain at the French club as Marseille continue efforts to reshape their squad ahead of next season.

According to Media Foot, newly promoted Sunderland are moving strongly for Kondogbia as head coach Régis Le Bris seeks experienced reinforcements capable of helping the club compete domestically and in Europe next season.

The midfielder’s profile is said to appeal strongly to the Sunderland manager, who values his extensive experience across Europe’s top leagues as well as his physical presence and technical qualities in midfield.

Kondogbia has enjoyed a long career at elite level, representing clubs including Monaco, Sevilla, Inter Milan, Valencia and Atlético Madrid before joining Marseille.

The former RC Lens player has built a reputation as a powerful midfielder capable of operating both defensively and in possession-based systems.

However, his time at Marseille appears to be approaching its conclusion after a difficult campaign disrupted by injury and limited playing time.

This season, the midfielder made only 17 appearances in all competitions, recording one assist in just over 1,000 minutes on the pitch.

He has not played since April due to a thigh injury, but Sunderland reportedly remain determined to complete a deal despite concerns surrounding his recent fitness record.

Marseille are also believed to be open to his departure as part of broader financial restructuring plans.

The French club are reportedly looking to reduce their wage bill, with Kondogbia among the club’s highest earners.

The Central African midfielder currently earns around €5.45 million annually at Marseille, while his market value is estimated at approximately €4 million.

For Sunderland, the move would represent a statement signing as the club prepares for another ambitious season under Le Bris. The Black Cats are already being linked with several players across Europe as they attempt to strengthen multiple areas of the squad.

Reports in England and Italy suggest Sunderland are monitoring a range of targets, including Swedish defender Emil Holm and Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu, while transfer speculation also continues around other Premier League and European-based players.

Within Francophone African football circles, Kondogbia remains one of the most recognisable midfielders of his generation.

His career path through France, Spain and Italy has made him a respected figure among African players competing in Europe’s top divisions.
