Kylian Mbappe equals Ronaldo record in Real Madrid victory

Kylian Mbappe added another landmark achievement to his growing career after equalling a historic scoring record previously set by Cristiano Ronaldo during Real Madrid’s 4-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday night.

The French forward scored once in the final round of the 2025-26 La Liga season, taking his tally to 86 goals in his first two seasons with the Spanish club — the same number Ronaldo managed during his opening two campaigns in Madrid.

The match was played in front of more than 71,000 supporters at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and saw Real Madrid officially conclude the league season in second place with 86 points, behind champions FC Barcelona.

According to football statistics platform Stats Foot, Mbappe has now become only the second player in the club’s history to reach the 86-goal mark across his first two seasons.

The France international scored 44 goals during his debut season with Real Madrid before adding another 42 this campaign.

Ronaldo, who joined the club in 2009, netted 33 goals in his first season before producing 53 in his second year to reach the same overall total.

Mbappe’s latest achievement further strengthened comparisons between the French star and the former Real Madrid forward, who remains one of the most successful players in the club’s history.

The game itself also carried emotional significance for several figures connected to the Madrid side.

It marked the final appearance for club captain Dani Carvajal after a 23-year association with Real Madrid. It was also the last match for coach Alvaro Arbeloa and defender David Alaba.

While the farewell atmosphere dominated much of the evening, Mbappe’s goal ensured the spotlight once again fell on the striker’s extraordinary consistency in front of goal.

The 27-year-old also reached another historic milestone by becoming the first French player to score at least 25 goals in six consecutive seasons across Europe’s top five leagues.

The run began during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, where he achieved the feat four times in Ligue 1 before repeating it in consecutive seasons in Spain with Real Madrid.

Mbappe, whose father is from Cameroon and mother is from Algeria, has continued to establish himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards since arriving in Madrid.

His goal against Athletic Bilbao also secured the Pichichi Trophy for the second season in succession.

He finished last season with 31 league goals and retained the award this year after scoring 25 times in La Liga.

In doing so, Mbappe became the first Real Madrid player since Ronaldo in 2014 and 2015 to win the Spanish league’s top scorer award in consecutive campaigns.

The achievement adds to a growing list of records for the French international, who is increasingly being viewed as the player expected to lead Real Madrid into a new era after the departures of several senior figures.

With Ronaldo’s scoring landmark now matched, attention is likely to turn to whether Mbappe can surpass even more of the Portuguese star’s achievements in the coming seasons.
