Senegal boss Thiaw defends Malang Sarr World Cup omission

Pape Thiaw has defended his decision to leave Malang Sarr out of Senegal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the omission was based solely on selection considerations despite growing debate among supporters.

The exclusion of the defender has become a major talking point in Senegal following an impressive campaign in France that saw Sarr named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. His performances at club level had led many fans to expect he would secure a place in the squad travelling to North America.

Reports in Senegal had also claimed that some experienced members of the national side were opposed to the former Chelsea F.C. defender being integrated into the team before the tournament.

Speaking after announcing his final squad, Thiaw dismissed suggestions that the decision had been influenced by anything other than footballing considerations and the overall balance of his group.

“We’ve been hearing about Malang Sarr for quite some time. He’s an excellent player, and I’ve spoken with him. He’s a disciplined guy,” Thiaw said.

The Senegal coach also praised Sarr for his performances during the domestic season in France and explained that he had personally maintained communication with the defender in recent weeks.

“I congratulated him on making the Ligue 1 XI. Now, there are choices to be made, and I stand by them. This is a balanced and well-considered group.”

Thiaw revealed that he had spoken with the player twice over the phone, both to discuss his progress and to acknowledge his achievements.

“I spoke with Malang Sarr twice on the phone. The first time was to chat with him, the second was to congratulate him. I’m keeping an eye on him. I’ve named him among my reserves,” he added.

Senegal head into the World Cup regarded as one of Africa’s strongest contenders after an impressive recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.

The Lions defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final, although the Confederation of African Football later controversially awarded the title to the hosts after ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match. The dispute has since been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the continental title, Senegal are expected to arrive at the World Cup with high expectations and a squad filled with experienced internationals.

The West Africans have been drawn in Group I and will open their campaign against France national football team in New Jersey on 16 June. The fixture carries added significance as it mirrors Senegal’s famous victory over the then world champions at the 2002 World Cup.

Senegal will also face Norway and Iraq during the group stage as they attempt to progress deep into the competition.

Thiaw’s squad announcement, however, has ensured that attention remains fixed not only on the players selected, but also on those left behind. The omission of Sarr, despite his strong form in Ligue 1, is likely to remain one of the most debated decisions ahead of Senegal’s World Cup campaign.
