Sinayoko double secures Auxerre’s Ligue 1 survival

Auxerre secured their place in Ligue 1 for another season after a decisive 2-0 victory away to Lille, with Lassine Sinayoko once again proving the difference in a match that carried major implications at both ends of the table.

The Malian striker scored twice at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday, opening the scoring in the 32nd minute before adding a second goal in stoppage time to seal a result that guarantees Auxerre’s survival in France’s top division.

The victory lifts Auxerre to 34 points and moves them into 15th place, two points above the relegation play-off position currently occupied by Nice. The outcome completes a dramatic turnaround for a side whose prospects of avoiding danger had appeared uncertain only weeks earlier.

Sinayoko has emerged as the central figure in Auxerre’s late-season revival, delivering decisive contributions in each of the club’s final three matches.

Earlier this month, he played a leading role in a 3-1 home win by scoring once and providing an assist. He followed that performance with another crucial intervention against Nice, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory after the sides had been level at 1-1.

His display against Lille completed a remarkable sequence in which Auxerre recorded three consecutive victories, each driven by the influence of the 25-year-old forward.

The latest result came during a difficult away trip against a Lille side that ultimately finished third in Ligue 1. Despite the challenge, Auxerre showed resilience and composure, relying once more on the form of their leading attacker.

Sinayoko’s opening goal gave the visitors control before his late strike removed any remaining uncertainty and confirmed Auxerre’s top-flight status.

The striker’s importance to the team has been reflected throughout the season. He ends the campaign as Auxerre’s leading scorer and leading assist provider, registering 12 goals and four assists in Ligue 1.

Those numbers have also placed him among the top five scorers in the division, underlining his growing reputation as one of the league’s standout attacking players this season.

Beyond the statistics, Sinayoko has become a symbol of Auxerre’s determination during the closing weeks of the campaign. His performances in crucial moments have helped steer the club away from relegation danger and preserve its place among French football’s elite.

Auxerre’s victory also had consequences elsewhere in the table. The result means Nice drop into the relegation play-off position, while Lille’s third-place finish remains enough to secure qualification for the Champions League.

For Auxerre, however, the focus remained firmly on survival — and on the player who delivered it.

As pressure mounted in the closing stages of the season, Sinayoko consistently provided the moments that mattered most. From goals to assists and match-winning interventions, the Malian forward became the driving force behind one of the league’s most important escapes.

What once appeared an uncertain battle for survival has now ended in celebration, with Auxerre preserving their Ligue 1 status thanks largely to the outstanding form of their talismanic striker.
