Former Al Ahly SC coach Juan Carlos Garrido has confirmed that he would welcome the opportunity to return to the Egyptian side amid the club’s search for a foreign manager ahead of next season.
The Spaniard addressed growing speculation linking him with a second spell at the Cairo club after comments made by former Al Ahly midfielder Saleh Gomaa suggested Garrido was interested in leading the team again.
Al Ahly are currently evaluating managerial options as they prepare for the upcoming campaign, with the club reportedly considering several foreign candidates for the position.
In comments given to Batolat, Garrido confirmed the reports surrounding his willingness to return to the club where he previously enjoyed continental success.
“Yes, I did talk to Saleh Gomaa about the matter, and I have a desire to return to Al-Ahly.”
Former coach points to previous success
Garrido also explained that his familiarity with the club would help him achieve positive results if given another opportunity.
“Especially since I know the club well and am capable of achieving success with it.”
The Spaniard highlighted his previous achievements with Al Ahly, referencing the trophy he won during his earlier spell in charge.
“We have already won the Confederation Cup.”
Garrido remains a memorable figure for many Al Ahly supporters because of his role in guiding the club to the Confederation of African Football Confederation Cup title in 2014.
That triumph marked the first time in the club’s history that Al Ahly had won the competition, giving Garrido a significant place in the team’s modern continental history.
Although his time with the club was relatively short, the achievement ensured his tenure would continue to be remembered positively among sections of the fanbase.
Al Ahly continue search for foreign manager
The comments arrive at a time when Al Ahly are continuing efforts to appoint a new technical director for the upcoming season.
The club has not yet announced a final decision regarding its coaching situation, but speculation has intensified around several candidates in recent weeks.
Garrido’s remarks are likely to increase discussion over whether the Egyptian giants could seriously consider bringing back a coach who already understands the demands and expectations surrounding the club.
His knowledge of African football and previous experience working in Egypt may strengthen his position among supporters seeking stability and familiarity.
At the same time, Al Ahly’s leadership faces pressure to appoint a manager capable of maintaining the club’s dominance domestically while continuing to compete strongly in continental competitions.
Garrido’s previous spell still remembered
Garrido first took charge of Al Ahly during a significant period in the club’s history and quickly delivered continental silverware.
Winning the Confederation Cup represented a milestone achievement for the Cairo side, further cementing Al Ahly’s status as one of Africa’s leading football institutions.
Although the Spanish coach eventually departed after his initial spell, his success ensured he remained connected with the club in the memories of supporters and former players.
Saleh Gomaa’s recent comments about Garrido’s desire to return reopened discussion about the possibility of a reunion, and the coach’s latest statements have now confirmed that interest publicly for the first time.
Whether Al Ahly decide to pursue a formal agreement remains unclear, but Garrido has now made his position known as the club continues preparations for a new era on the touchline.
