Lamine Yamal leads Champions League goal contributions

Lamine Yamal has made the strongest start of his career in the Champions League, recording seven goal contributions in Barcelona’s opening four matches to establish himself among the competition’s most influential players.

The Barcelona forward scored in his side’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday, while Rafinha Diaz added two goals in the 52nd and 64th minutes as the Catalan club secured another important result in front of a full crowd at Camp Nou.

The win gave Barcelona three victories from their first four matches and lifted them to second place in the Champions League standings with nine points. They remain behind Paris Saint-Germain, who lead the table with a perfect record as the reigning champions of the previous two seasons.

Yamal’s latest contribution further underlined his growing influence in European football. He has now registered three goals and four assists in the competition this season, taking his total to seven goal contributions.

That figure puts him level with Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane at the top of the rankings, with no other player having contributed to more goals.

Paris Saint-Germain players occupy several of the positions immediately behind the leading pair. Malin and Dembele have six contributions each, while Ruiz has recorded five.

The numbers also represent a personal milestone for Yamal. His seven contributions after four rounds are the best return he has achieved at this stage of a Champions League campaign.

His previous highest tally after the same number of matches came during the 2025-2026 season, when he had recorded three goal contributions. The improvement highlights the teenager’s growing effectiveness in front of goal and his increasing importance to Barcelona’s attacking play.

His performances have attracted praise from former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who was speaking during TNT Sports’ analysis of Tuesday’s match.

“We are witnessing a superstar. He is exceptional by all standards. The goal-scoring contributions he is making at this age are frightening. He is achieving incredible numbers, to the point that in his teens he is among the contenders for the Ballon d’Or. This type of player, like Messi, Ronaldo and now Yamal, appears every now and then. In a decade his name will be alongside Messi and Ronaldo.”

Gerrard’s comments reflect the growing expectations surrounding Yamal, who has already established himself as one of Barcelona’s most important attacking players despite his young age.

The Champions League remains one of the major honours still missing from the forward’s collection. Yamal has already won the Spanish league, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona, while also celebrating success with Spain’s national team at the World Cup and European Championship.

He is now looking to add Europe’s biggest club trophy to that list.

Barcelona’s strong start has given them a promising position in the competition, while Yamal’s individual performances have made him one of its standout players. With three goals and four assists already to his name, the teenager is producing numbers that match some of the leading forwards in Europe.

The challenge now is to maintain that form and help Barcelona turn their promising campaign into Champions League success.
