Barcelona are reportedly considering a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie, who is said to be unhappy with his limited playing time during the 2026/27 season.
The Catalan club have swept aside most of their opponents this season, although defeats by PSG and Real Madrid have exposed concerns over their defensive setup. Barcelona regularly defend with their back line close to the halfway line, leaving them vulnerable to opponents with the pace to exploit the space behind.
Their attacking strength can sometimes compensate for that risk, but the approach has been less effective against Europe’s leading sides. Unless Barcelona strengthen at centre-back, their defensive weaknesses could again damage their Champions League ambitions, regardless of how many goals Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and their team-mates score.
Spanish media reports have identified Hincapie as a potential solution. The 24-year-old Ecuadorian has made seven appearances for Arsenal this season, starting only two matches. His total of 256 minutes amounts to fewer than three full games, compared with the 1,215 minutes played by fellow centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes.
Hincapie’s opportunities have been restricted following the arrival of Ezri Konsa, while the return to fitness of William Saliba could reduce his involvement further.
His profile would suit Barcelona. As a left-footed defender, he could compete with the underperforming Gerard Martin and partner Pau Cubarsi. Hincapie can also cover at left-back and left midfield, offering the versatility that would appeal to the Blaugranes.
Arsenal face obstacles to any deal
A move would not be straightforward. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has generally been reluctant to sanction departures during the January transfer window, while Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen only became permanent in the summer. He is under contract with Arsenal until 2031, meaning the North London club have no pressing financial reason to sell.
However, Barcelona sporting director Deco is understood to have contacted Hincapie’s representatives in an attempt to persuade the player that his future could lie in Spain.
Hincapie’s statistics suggest he has made a significant contribution despite his limited minutes. His 83 attempted tackles are the fourth-highest total in the Arsenal squad, while his 72 headed clearances rank third. He has also made 125 clearances, placing him among only five Arsenal players to have reached 100.
His one-on-one duel success rate of 61.89% is the best at the club among players to have contested at least 100 duels. Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes have higher percentages, but neither has reached that number of contests.
Hincapie has competed in more than 100 aerial duels and won 54 of them. His pass-completion rate of 87.12% is also among Arsenal’s highest.
Those figures make his continued role as a reserve difficult to explain and could encourage the player and his representatives to seek an exit. Arsenal have progressed significantly under Arteta, but a move to Barcelona would be difficult to reject if Hincapie believes his opportunities at Emirates Stadium will remain limited.
