Paris Saint-Germain smash Villarreal 6-0 to set Champions League records

Paris Saint-Germain produced a landmark 6-0 victory over Villarreal in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase, recording the biggest away win in the club’s history in European competition and reviving painful memories for Spanish opposition following Barcelona’s 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi made an error that allowed Desire Doue to double Paris’s advantage three minutes later. Senny Mayulu added a third in the 13th minute, with Fabian Ruiz completing a remarkable opening spell by making it 4-0 in the 17th minute.

Ruiz scored again five minutes after the restart to put Paris further ahead. Substitute David Boly then completed the rout in the 78th minute, only a few minutes after coming on, as Luis Enrique’s side secured a commanding victory accompanied by a series of records.

According to Stats Foot, Paris scored four times in only eight minutes. Neves struck in the ninth minute, followed by Doue in the 12th, Mayulu in the 13th and Ruiz in the 17th.

That made Paris Saint-Germain the first team in Champions League history to score four goals in a shorter period, with the sequence lasting precisely 16 minutes and two seconds from the opening whistle.

The French side also scored three times inside the opening 13 minutes, making it the fastest a visiting team had reached a third goal in the competition. The previous record belonged to Borussia Dortmund, who scored their third goal in the 17th minute against Legia in 2016.

Paris became the first French club to win an away Champions League match by a six-goal margin since Olympique Lyon beat Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 on 7 December 2011.

They are also only the second club in the competition’s history to defeat a Spanish side by six goals. Bayern Munich were the first, beating Barcelona 8-2 on 14 August 2020.

Another record followed as Paris became the first team ever to score six away goals against Spanish opposition in the Champions League. The previous best was held by Monaco, who scored five against Deportivo La Coruna on 8 December 2004.

The result extended Paris Saint-Germain’s unbeaten run in the Champions League to 14 matches, comprising 10 wins and four draws. That equals the competition’s longest unbeaten sequence, previously achieved by Lyon between December 2004 and March 2006.

Paris have also scored 20 goals after four rounds of this season’s Champions League, setting a new record at that stage and surpassing the 17 they managed in the group stage of the 2017-18 campaign.
