Fabian Ruiz became only the second Spanish player to score twice against another Spanish club in the UEFA Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain beat Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday.
Ruiz struck twice for Luis Enrique’s side during a dominant fourth-round victory in the league phase of the competition.
His first goal came in the 17th minute, making it 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain. The Spain international then scored again 10 minutes after the interval to put his side 5-0 ahead.
According to statistics from MisterChip, Ruiz is just the second Spanish player to score a brace against a fellow Spanish club in the history of the UEFA Champions League.
The only previous occasion came on 2 May 2000, when Valencia’s Miguel Angel Angulo scored twice against Barcelona in a 4-1 victory in the second leg of their semi-final.
The result also gave Villarreal an unwanted place in the competition’s record books.
They became the first Spanish team to lose a home match in the UEFA Champions League by six goals. The previous heaviest home defeat suffered by a Spanish club in the competition was Deportivo La Coruna’s 5-0 loss to Monaco on 8 December 2004.
