Gambia assistant coach Abdou Jammeh says representing their country provides all the motivation his players need ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana.
The Scorpions travel to the Accra Sports Stadium on the back of a 2-1 victory over Somalia in their opening Group C fixture, while Ghana are looking to respond after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire.
With three points at stake for both teams, Jammeh believes the responsibility of wearing the Gambian shirt is enough to inspire his players without requiring additional motivation from the coaching staff.
“Yeah, playing for the national team or representing your country is the only motivation. We don’t need to motivate any of our players,” Jammeh said.
The assistant coach added that the players understand the significance of the fixture and the responsibility that comes with representing the Scorpions.
“They are only motivated by representing the country. So, I think everybody knows the task ahead. We are focused on delivering the best result we can have tomorrow,” he added.
Gambia target another positive result
Gambia currently share the top spot in Group C with Côte d’Ivoire after both nations won their opening matches.
Ghana, meanwhile, are at the bottom of the group after their defeat to Côte d’Ivoire and will be under pressure to respond on home soil.
The Scorpions will therefore be aiming to build on their opening victory and maintain their strong start, while Ghana need three points to revive their qualifying campaign.
Jammeh believes his players are fully aware of what is at stake and will draw their motivation from the opportunity to represent their country.
The match at the Accra Sports Stadium kicks off at 16:00 GMT on Tuesday.
