Spain and Saudi Arabia meet in Atlanta on Sunday with both sides searching for a first victory after contrasting but equally frustrating starts to their FIFA World Cup campaigns.
Group H remains delicately poised after the opening round of matches produced two draws. Spain were held to a shock goalless stalemate by World Cup debutants Cabo Verde, while Saudi Arabia earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Uruguay.
As a result, all four teams in the group begin matchday two level on one point.
For Spain, the challenge is turning dominance into goals.
Luis de la Fuente’s side arrived in the United States among the favourites to lift the trophy but were unable to break down a stubborn Cabo Verde defence despite controlling possession and registering 27 shots.
Ferran Torres came closest to scoring when he struck the crossbar before veteran goalkeeper Vozinha produced a brilliant save to deny Mikel Oyarzabal. The introductions of Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino also failed to unlock the Blue Sharks’ resistance.
The European champions will therefore be under pressure to respond against Saudi Arabia, with another slip-up potentially complicating their route to the knockout stage.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, head to Atlanta with confidence growing.
The Green Falcons once again demonstrated their ability to trouble football’s traditional powers when they held Uruguay in Miami. Defender Abdulelah Al Amri gave the Saudis a surprise lead before Maximiliano Araujo rescued a point for Marcelo Bielsa’s side late in the second half.
It was another reminder of Saudi Arabia’s reputation for producing unexpected World Cup results, forged most famously in their stunning victory over eventual champions Argentina in Qatar four years ago.
Coach Herve Renard’s side showed discipline, organisation and resilience against Uruguay and will likely adopt a similar approach against Spain.
The Spaniards possess considerably more technical quality and attacking depth, but Saudi Arabia will take encouragement from Cabo Verde’s blueprint. If one underdog can frustrate Spain for 90 minutes, another will believe it can do the same.
Spain’s midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Fabian Ruiz are expected to dictate possession once again, while much attention will focus on whether teenage star Lamine Yamal earns a starting role after making an impact from the bench in the opening match.
Saudi Arabia’s hopes may rest on remaining compact defensively and capitalising on any opportunities that emerge on the counter-attack.
With Uruguay and Cabo Verde facing each other later the same day in Miami, the outcome in Atlanta could have significant implications for the race to qualify from Group H.
Spain know victory would put them in a strong position heading into their final group game against Uruguay. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, are aware that another positive result could move them to the brink of a place in the knockout rounds.
