2026 World Cup: Mexico and South Korea battle for knockout-stage spot in Group A clash- PREVIEW

Mexico and South Korea meet in what could prove a decisive Group A showdown at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday night in Guadalajara, with both sides looking to maintain perfect starts and move closer to the knockout stages.

The co-hosts Mexico arrive in strong form after opening their campaign with a confident 2-0 win over South Africa, while South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in an impressive comeback performance.

With both teams sitting on three points, victory in this fixture would place either side in a commanding position to top the group and all but guarantee progression to the last 16.

Mexico boosted but forced into defensive change

Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre faces a key defensive adjustment after centre-back César Montes was sent off in the opening match and is now suspended.

Montes is expected to be replaced by Luis Romo in central defence as Aguirre looks to maintain stability at the back following a run of improved defensive performances, including three clean sheets in their last four matches.

In midfield, naturalised player Álvaro Fidalgo is expected to continue in a creative role, tasked with linking play and supporting the attacking unit.

Up front, experienced striker Raúl Jiménez is likely to lead the line once again. His physical presence, aerial strength and movement inside the box remain central to Mexico’s attacking structure.

Mexico’s confidence is also supported by recent results, with seven wins and two draws from their last nine matches, as well as the momentum carried into their tournament opener.

South Korea head into the match with belief after overturning a deficit to beat Czechia in their first Group A game.

Coach Hong Myung-bo is expected to stick largely with his established structure, although he must cope without defender Cho Yu-min, who is ruled out with injury.

At the heart of defence, Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae is expected to start and provide leadership against Mexico’s mobile attacking line.

In midfield, PSG playmaker Lee Kang-in will again be central to South Korea’s rhythm. He impressed in the opener with a perfect passing display and will be responsible for dictating tempo in possession.

Captain Son Heung-min is expected to lead the attack. His pace and movement in transition remain South Korea’s most dangerous weapon, particularly against sides that commit bodies forward.

South Korea have been in strong form overall, winning six of their last eight matches and extending their current winning streak to three games after their comeback victory over Czechia.

The match also carries historical weight. South Korea have not beaten Mexico since 2006, with Mexico winning three of the last four meetings.

Their most recent encounter ended 2-2 in 2025, when Mexico scored a late equaliser deep into stoppage time.

While Mexico will benefit from home support at Estadio Guadalajara and altitude conditions, South Korea’s recent resilience means the contest is widely expected to be tightly balanced.

Both teams understand the stakes. A win would push them to the brink of qualification and likely secure top spot in Group A, making this one of the most significant fixtures of the group stage so far.

Kick-off is scheduled for Thursday evening at Estadio Guadalajara.
