2026 World Cup: Mbappé and Messi locked in Golden Boot duel

The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is intensifying as the tournament enters the knockout stage, with football’s biggest names now pulling clear at the top of the scoring charts.

France forward Kylian Mbappé and Argentina captain Lionel Messi are currently level on six goals each, setting up a high-profile battle for the tournament’s top scorer award.

Assists are being used as a tiebreaker, adding another layer of competition between the two global superstars.

Mbappé, who won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup, strengthened his position with a brace against Sweden in the Round of 32.

His goals came after earlier group-stage doubles against Senegal and Iraq, underlining his consistency in front of goal.

Messi, meanwhile, has matched Mbappé’s six-goal tally in fewer matches, having scored his goals across just three appearances.

The Argentine legend recorded a hat-trick in his nation’s opening match against Algeria and followed it up with a brace against Austria. He also added a moment of brilliance in the knockout stage with a free kick from outside the box.

With Argentina still in contention, Messi will have another opportunity to move ahead in the race when his side face Cape Verde in the Round of 32.

The competition for the Golden Boot is not limited to the two leading figures.

A number of elite forwards remain in pursuit, with several players just behind the top two in the rankings. Norway’s Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane are both on five goals, keeping the pressure on the leaders.

France’s Ousmane Dembélé follows closely with four goals and two assists, while Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior, Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr, Germany’s Deniz Undav, Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi, and Mexico’s Julián Quiñones also feature among the leading scorers.

The standings highlight the global spread of attacking talent at this year’s tournament, with players from Europe, South America, Africa, and North America all represented in the top ten.
