Ghana are likely to play an additional preparatory match ahead of their opening fixture at the 2026 World Cup, according to the Ghana Football Association’s Communications Director, as preparations intensify for the global tournament.
Henry Asante Twum, communications director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), indicated that plans are underway to secure one more friendly encounter before the Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama.
The potential fixture is expected to form part of the team’s final build-up as they fine-tune tactics and squad cohesion.
“Ghana likely to play another friendly before first match against Panama at the 2026 World Cup” – Henry Asante Twum GFA Communications Director said via 3Sports.
The Black Stars are aiming to arrive at the tournament in peak condition, with the GFA placing emphasis on adequate match preparation against competitive opposition.
While details of the proposed friendly, including the opponent and venue, have yet to be confirmed, the move reflects a broader strategy to ensure readiness for the challenges ahead.
Ghana’s opening match against Panama at the World Cup is anticipated to be a crucial encounter, potentially setting the tone for their progress in the tournament.
With the expanded format of the 2026 World Cup, teams are expected to face increased demands, making thorough preparation even more essential.
In addition to outlining plans for pre-tournament fixtures, Asante Twum also confirmed a key date regarding squad selection.
The announcement of the final team list is expected shortly before the competition begins, giving fans and analysts clarity on the players chosen to represent the West African nation.
“Ghana to announce final squad for 2026 World Cup on June 1st 2026,” he added.
The timing of the squad announcement suggests the technical team will utilise the remaining months to assess player form, fitness, and tactical suitability.
It also allows for late decisions in response to injuries or standout performances in domestic and international competitions.
For Ghana, participation in the 2026 tournament marks another opportunity to build on their World Cup history and reassert themselves on the global stage.
The Black Stars have previously enjoyed notable campaigns, including reaching the quarter-finals in 2010, and expectations remain high among supporters.
Preparations in modern international football often include a series of friendly matches designed to simulate tournament conditions.
These fixtures provide coaches with the opportunity to test formations, integrate new players, and address weaknesses identified in earlier games.
To that end, Ghana will play four friendly games against Austria, Germany, Mexico and Wales before the World Cup kicks off.
The first of those two will take place in March against Austria and Germany.
Ghana are drawn in Group L of the 2026 World Cup against England, Croatia and Panama.
