The Egypt national football team head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with renewed confidence and a strong sense of purpose as they attempt to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Egypt, one of Africa’s most established football nations, return to the global stage after missing out on the 2022 tournament, having secured qualification for only their fourth World Cup appearance.

Their place in North America was earned through an impressive African qualifying campaign in which they remained unbeaten, combining defensive organisation with attacking efficiency to top their group comfortably.

The team conceded just two goals across ten matches, highlighting a defensive resilience that formed the foundation of their success and raised expectations among supporters ahead of the finals.

Managed by former national team star Hossam Hassan, Egypt arrive at the tournament ranked 29th in the world and carrying hopes of finally progressing beyond the group stage.

Hassan, who is widely regarded as one of Egypt’s greatest-ever players, took charge in February 2024 and quickly reshaped the team’s identity. He has instilled discipline, organisation and belief, guiding Egypt to their first unbeaten World Cup qualifying campaign in more than 90 years.

Captain Mohamed Salah remains the most recognisable figure in the squad and continues to lead the team, but Egypt are no longer viewed as a side overly dependent on their Liverpool forward.

Instead, a more balanced attacking structure has emerged, with Omar Marmoush playing an increasingly important role. Marmoush, now a Manchester City forward, brings pace, power and finishing ability that complement Salah’s experience and creativity.

Additional attacking options include Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, Mostafa Mohamed and Ahmed Sayed Zizo, giving Egypt multiple goal-scoring threats heading into the tournament.

Egypt’s recent history at the World Cup has been mixed. Their 2018 campaign ended in disappointment with three group-stage defeats, following a 28-year absence from the competition. They also missed the 2022 edition, making the 2026 tournament an opportunity for redemption.

Across their four World Cup appearances, Egypt have never progressed beyond the group stage, playing seven matches in total, with two draws, five defeats, five goals scored and 12 conceded.

However, their current form suggests optimism. The unbeaten qualification run, featuring eight wins and two draws, has strengthened belief that this squad is better equipped to compete on the global stage.

Egypt’s tactical setup is expected to rely on a solid defensive base, quick transitions and the individual quality of their attacking players. With Salah often drawing attention from opposition defences, Marmoush could play a decisive role in breaking down tightly organised teams.

Egypt’s group-stage fixtures will see them face Belgium on June 15, New Zealand on June 22 and Iran on June 27. It will be a varied set of opponents, none of whom Egypt have faced regularly in World Cup competition.

Historically, Egypt have struggled against top-tier opposition at the finals, but this squad enters the tournament with greater balance and depth than previous generations.
