2026 World Cup: Coach Broos questions Zwane ban as South Africa face crucial Czechia clash

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has described Themba Zwane’s three-match suspension as excessive, as Bafana Bafana prepare for a critical Group A fixture against Czechia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Zwane, 36, was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after appearing to strike a Mexican opponent in the face during a brief off-the-ball incident in South Africa’s opening defeat.

The decision was confirmed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, and FIFA has since imposed a three-match ban.

South Africa have confirmed they will appeal the sanction, with Broos expressing frustration at the timing and severity of the punishment as his side fight to remain in the competition.

Speaking ahead of the Czechia match, Broos insisted the punishment did not reflect the nature of the incident and pointed to other high-profile decisions in international football as comparison.

“I’m a little bit frustrated that Themba [Zwane] got a three-match suspension, we will appeal it, our situation is clear hey, if we don’t win tomorrow, we play the last game against South Korea for nothing and that’s something we have to avoid you know,” Broos said, via SuperSport Football.

He added: “First of all I think the red card is too severe, I saw the situation, I don’t think it was a red card, when I see what happened with Messi yesterday, I don’t agree certainly not, there was not even a VAR with Messi, with us there was, and the Mexican player blocked my player,” he said.

“Themba tried to go past him and put his arm over his shoulder, he didn’t do anything, a red card and a three match suspension, I’m sorry, it’s too severe. And again; I don’t want Messi to be red-carded, he needs to be on the pitch, we saw what a wonderful player he is. But yes, I’m a little frustrated by it because Themba got three match suspension.”

The South African coach’s comments underline the frustration within the camp, particularly as Zwane’s absence removes one of the team’s most experienced attacking midfielders at a decisive stage of the tournament.

South Africa’s situation in Group A has been further complicated by the suspension of midfielder Sphephelo Sithole, who is also ruled out after receiving a red card in the same opening match against co-hosts Mexico.

With two key players unavailable, Broos faces a significant selection challenge as his side prepare to meet Czechia, who also suffered defeat in their opening fixture.

The match is widely seen as a must-not-lose encounter for South Africa, with defeat potentially leaving their hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging by a thread.

Broos will hope his reshaped squad can respond under pressure and keep their World Cup campaign alive heading into the final group match against South Korea.
