2026 World Cup: Belgium face resurgent USA in finely balanced Round of 16 clash – PREVIEW

The United States (USA) will attempt to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 24 years when they take on Belgium in one of the most evenly matched ties of the Round of 16.

For the Americans, victory would represent another milestone in what has already been a landmark tournament on home soil.

Belgium, meanwhile, arrive looking to restore their standing on the global stage after their disappointing group-stage exit at the previous World Cup in Qatar.

Although Belgium are considered slight favourites heading into the contest, their inconsistent performances throughout the tournament have left the tie finely balanced.

The Europeans progressed as winners of their group but recorded three draws in four competitive matches before overcoming Senegal in extra time to secure their place in the last 16.

The United States have built momentum throughout the competition under Mauricio Pochettino.

After topping their group with victories over Paraguay and Australia before a narrow defeat to Turkey, they advanced to the knockout stage by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Playing at Seattle’s Lumen Field is expected to hand the hosts another significant advantage, with the stadium atmosphere having played a major role in their campaign so far.

The Americans have been handed another timely boost with striker Folarin Balogun now available for selection.

Balogun, who leads the United States with three goals at the tournament, had initially been expected to miss the match following a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, FIFA has postponed his suspension, allowing him to feature against Belgium.

His availability is regarded as a major boost for Pochettino’s attack. Balogun has become a central figure in the American frontline, with his return also allowing Ricardo Pepi to provide attacking depth from the bench.

Belgium, however, possess plenty of attacking quality of their own.

Kevin De Bruyne is expected to orchestrate play from midfield, while Romelu Lukaku’s physical presence and Jérémy Doku’s pace offer constant threats in the final third.

The midfield battle could prove decisive, with Belgium’s creativity expected to come up against the energy and pressing ability of Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie.

If Balogun is able to exploit space behind Belgium’s defence, the hosts could have a clear route to victory.

At the other end, Belgium will look to Lukaku and Doku to test an American backline that has shown signs of vulnerability during the tournament.

Recent form offers reasons for optimism for both teams.

The United States have won three of their four World Cup matches, including a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay and a 2-0 success against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Their only defeat came against Turkey after qualification had already been secured.

Belgium’s path has been less straightforward. They defeated New Zealand 5-1 but were held by Egypt, Iran and Senegal before eventually overcoming the Senegalese side in extra time during the Round of 32.

History also favours Belgium.

The two nations have met eight times, with Belgium winning five matches, the United States two and one ending in a draw.

Their most memorable World Cup meeting came in Brazil in 2014 when Belgium defeated the Americans 2-1 after extra time in the Round of 16.

Earlier this year, Belgium also claimed a 5-2 victory in a friendly, although both sides will recognise that knockout football presents a very different challenge.

For the United States, Monday’s contest offers the opportunity to write a new chapter in their World Cup history in front of a home crowd.

Belgium, meanwhile, know another deep run in the competition could help erase memories of their disappointing exit four years ago.

With a place in the quarter-finals awaiting the winner, where either Mexico or England will be the next opponents, both sides have every incentive to deliver in what promises to be one of the standout matches of the Round of 16.
