17-year-old DR Congo midfielder Mbungu signs first pro deal with Lyon

DR Congo midfielder Cluver Sambi Mbungu has taken a major step in his football career after signing his first professional contract with French club Olympique Lyonnais.

The Ligue 1 side confirmed the arrival of the 17-year-old from Caen, securing his services on a deal that will run until the summer of 2029.

The move represents a significant milestone for one of DR Congo’s most highly rated young talents, who now begins a new chapter at one of France’s most historic clubs.

Sambi Mbungu joins Lyon after several years of development at Stade Malherbe Caen, where he progressed through the youth system and established himself as a promising midfielder.

Although he will not immediately join Lyon’s senior team, the teenager will continue his development with the club’s reserve side under coach Gueïda Fofana.

The move is designed to allow the young midfielder to adapt to his new surroundings, gain experience and continue improving before pushing for opportunities with the first team.

Born in Kinshasa, Sambi Mbungu started his football journey in Normandy, France, after moving to Vernon at a young age.

He later joined Caen’s academy at the age of 13, where he developed through the various youth categories before earning a place with the reserve team.

During the previous season, the midfielder featured 19 times in National 3, France’s fifth tier, scoring three goals as he continued to attract attention with his performances.

His progress at Caen convinced Lyon to move for his signature, despite competition from other clubs interested in securing one of the most promising young players from DR Congo.

The teenager ultimately chose Lyon as the next stage of his development, with the club showing confidence in his long-term potential by offering him his first professional contract.

For Sambi Mbungu, the transfer represents a significant opportunity to continue his growth within one of French football’s biggest institutions.

Lyon have a strong reputation for developing young players, with several academy graduates going on to become established professionals in France and abroad.

The Congolese midfielder will now hope to follow that pathway as he begins life with the club’s reserve squad.

His arrival also highlights the continued emergence of young African talent in European football, with many clubs investing in promising players from the continent and providing pathways into professional football.

For DR Congo, Sambi Mbungu’s progress will be closely followed as the country continues to produce talented footballers capable of making an impact internationally.
