South Africa’s Jayden Adams dies aged 25 weeks after World Cup appearance

South Africa international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The midfielder, who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches during the tournament, helping his country reach the knockout rounds before their campaign ended with a round-of-32 defeat to co-hosts Canada.

His death has sent shockwaves through South African football, coming shortly after he played a key role in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful CAF Champions League campaign and made his World Cup debut on football’s biggest stage.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, led the tributes, describing Adams as one of the country’s brightest football talents.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie said, in a statement.

He added:

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

Authorities have confirmed that police have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

The cause of Adams’ death has not yet been confirmed.

McKenzie appealed for patience and sensitivity while investigations continue.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.”

He concluded:

“Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.”

The tragedy comes during what had been one of the most significant periods of Adams’ career.

The 25-year-old recently made his FIFA World Cup debut, appearing in all of South Africa’s group-stage fixtures as Bafana Bafana progressed to the knockout phase of the tournament.

He had also been instrumental in Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League triumph, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s leading midfielders.

Only two weeks before his death, Adams had suffered a personal loss following the passing of his grandmother, Marianna Adams.

Despite that bereavement, he continued to represent South Africa at the World Cup, playing in Bafana Bafana’s group-stage match against Czechia in what was widely viewed as a demonstration of his professionalism and commitment to the national team.

His passing is a major blow to South African football and to a Mamelodi Sundowns side that had relied on his performances during a successful season.
