Uncertainty is beginning to surround the future of André-Frank Zambo Anguissa at SSC Napoli, as an injury-disrupted campaign has sparked fresh questions about what comes next for the experienced midfielder.
For the first time since arriving in Naples, Anguissa has endured a season that broke his rhythm.
A hamstring injury suffered in November, followed by lingering back problems, sidelined the 30-year-old for nearly three months. In that period, he missed crucial fixtures across Serie A, the Champions League, and the Italian Cup — and perhaps most painfully, was forced to sit out the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
It was a rare interruption for a player who, until now, had been one of Napoli’s most reliable and consistent performers.
Anguissa problems
Since joining from Fulham FC during the 2021–22 season — initially on loan before making the move permanent — Anguissa had established himself as a cornerstone in midfield. Across multiple managerial changes, he remained a constant: disciplined, powerful, and tactically intelligent.
But this season changed that narrative.
And Napoli felt it.
Without Anguissa anchoring the midfield, the Italian side struggled to find balance in key moments, eventually crashing out in the group stage of the Champions League. Domestically, they have managed to stay competitive, but the absence of one of their most important players exposed gaps that were difficult to cover.
His return, however, has offered a glimpse of what was missing.
Napoli’s response
Back on the pitch since early March, Anguissa has gradually been reintegrated by head coach Antonio Conte, even completing a full 90 minutes in a crucial win over AC Milan. The signs are encouraging but the bigger question now extends beyond form.
It is about the future.
Former Cameroon international Bernard Tchoutang believes the midfielder’s absence had a clear impact on both club and country.
“A three-month absence is a long time, and it takes time to recover,” he noted. “But Zambo Anguissa is very professional… his absence was detrimental because we know how important he is.”
Even in a disrupted season, Anguissa has still delivered — registering four goals and two assists despite missing 22 matches. It is a return that underlines his value and versatility, a midfielder capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch.
Tchoutang even drew comparisons with the late Marc-Vivien Foé, highlighting Anguissa’s ability to defend, attack, and dictate tempo — a rare profile in modern football.
But admiration alone does not settle uncertainty.
With his contract running until 2027, Napoli remain in a strong position on paper. Yet football rarely operates on contracts alone. Timing, opportunity, and ambition often shape the next move and for a player entering his 30s, those decisions carry even more weight.
Former Cameroon assistant coach Sébastien Migné hinted at that delicate balance.
“It remains to be seen whether he’ll stay or look for another challenge,” he said, pointing to Napoli’s continued status as a top club but also acknowledging that new opportunities could emerge.
What could change
Financial factors could also come into play.
Valued at around €20 million and earning over €3 million annually, Anguissa represents both a sporting and economic asset. A move could offer improved terms — and perhaps a fresh competitive environment.
A return to the Premier League, where he previously featured with Fulham, has already been floated. But the landscape is not straightforward. At 30, he may not fit the recruitment profile of clubs like Arsenal FC or Chelsea FC, who have increasingly focused on younger talent.
That opens the door to alternative pathways.
Clubs with immediate ambitions whether in Europe or emerging markets could see Anguissa as the complete, ready-made midfielder they need. From Turkey to Saudi Arabia, interest in experienced, high-level players continues to grow.
And yet, one key detail remains: he is still happy in Naples.
Which makes this less about urgency… and more about possibility.
For now, Anguissa’s focus is clear regain full fitness, finish the season strongly, and reassert his importance in Napoli’s system.
But as the summer window approaches, the noise will only grow louder.
Because when a player of his profile becomes even slightly available, the market does not stay quiet.
And Napoli may soon face a decision they were not expecting to make.
