Zamalek threaten legal action over $7m financial crisis

Zamalek have threatened legal action against individuals making accusations of corruption and financial mismanagement against the club’s leadership as the Egyptian giants attempt to defend their handling of a financial crisis involving approximately $7m in outstanding obligations.

The board of directors, headed by Hussein Labib, has decided to publicly explain the circumstances behind the club’s financial difficulties, rejecting suggestions that the administration is solely responsible for the disputes involving former players, financial penalties and the ongoing suspension of player registrations.

The White Castle’s response follows growing media discussions about the club’s involvement in several cases that have reportedly resulted in financial penalties amounting to around $7m.

The administration insists that the problems cannot be attributed to a single decision or individual, arguing that a combination of financial and administrative challenges contributed to the accumulation of outstanding cases.

The board has also dismissed accusations directed at its members, maintaining that claims of wrongdoing must be supported by credible evidence rather than speculation.

Zamalek identify withdrawal of October land as major cause of financial problems

A central part of Zamalek’s explanation concerns the withdrawal of the club’s land in Sixth of October City, with the board identifying the decision, issued in August 2025, as a significant turning point in its financial difficulties.

According to the administration, losing the land had serious consequences for the club’s financial position, particularly its ability to maintain expected revenue flows and fulfil existing contractual commitments.

The financial difficulties that followed affected Zamalek’s capacity to meet obligations to several parties, including players who had previously signed contracts with the club.

Some of those individuals subsequently turned to the relevant authorities to pursue their outstanding payments, leading to formal complaints and legal proceedings against the Egyptian side.

The board believes these developments should be considered when examining the circumstances surrounding the financial disputes rather than placing the entire responsibility on the current administration.

The club also maintains that the accumulation of these cases was directly connected to the financial pressure created by the withdrawal of the land and the resulting difficulties in settling previous commitments.

Those disputes eventually contributed to financial rulings against Zamalek, further complicating efforts to resolve the registration suspension that continues to affect the club.

Zamalek prepare legal response to corruption allegations

Beyond explaining the origins of the financial crisis, the Labib-led administration has adopted a firm position against accusations concerning the management of the club’s resources.

The board has particularly rejected claims suggesting that its members were involved in wasting public funds or committing financial and administrative violations.

It insists that such allegations are unacceptable without concrete evidence and has indicated its willingness to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading them.

The administration’s position represents an escalation in its response to the growing criticism surrounding the club’s financial management.

Zamalek have also directed a message towards media organisations and commentators, urging them to exercise greater accuracy and responsibility when discussing the club’s financial affairs.

The board warned against the continued circulation of claims and information that it considers misleading, particularly when they involve serious allegations against members of the administration.

With the club continuing to deal with outstanding financial obligations, legal disputes and the registration suspension, the leadership appears determined to challenge what it considers unfair criticism while presenting its explanation of the circumstances behind the crisis.
