Zamalek strike late to snatch victory over APR FC in Kigali

Egyptian side Zamalek secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Rwanda’s APR FC with an 89th-minute goal in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday.

The decisive strike came just before the end of normal time, breaking the deadlock after a closely contested encounter in which APR FC had held their more illustrious opponents at bay for most of the match.

The result gives Zamalek an important advantage heading into the return fixture in Cairo, where the Egyptian giants will aim to secure qualification for the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.

For APR FC, the late goal was a painful setback after a disciplined display had kept the contest level and raised hopes of securing a valuable draw on home soil.

The Rwandan champions must now overcome the deficit in Egypt if they are to keep their Champions League campaign alive.

APR FC hold firm before late breakthrough

The match remained goalless at half-time, with APR FC showing resilience against a Zamalek side seeking to establish an advantage in the opening leg.

The home team maintained its defensive organisation throughout much of the encounter, frustrating the Egyptian visitors and limiting their opportunity to find the breakthrough.

As the game progressed without a goal, APR FC appeared increasingly well placed to earn a draw that would have left the tie evenly balanced ahead of the second leg.

However, Zamalek eventually found a way through in the closing stages, scoring in the 89th minute to secure victory and silence the home crowd.

The late goal proved decisive in a match where the difference between the two sides was not reflected in the scoreline until the final moments.

Zamalek take advantage into second leg

The Egyptian club will travel into the return fixture with a narrow but significant lead after avoiding a draw in Kigali.

Their late winner puts them in a stronger position as they prepare to host APR FC in Cairo, with qualification for the next round now within their reach.

For Zamalek, the result represents an important step towards progressing in the competition, although the tie remains unresolved and the return match will determine which side advances.

APR FC, meanwhile, will need to regroup after conceding so close to the final whistle.

Despite the defeat, their defensive performance offers some encouragement ahead of the decisive encounter. Their ability to keep Zamalek scoreless for almost the entire match demonstrated the resilience required to compete against a more established opponent.

However, the Rwandan champions will need to improve their attacking output in the second leg if they are to overturn the one-goal deficit.

APR FC face difficult task in Cairo

The return leg presents APR FC with a demanding challenge away from home, where they must find a way to recover from the narrow defeat while preventing Zamalek from extending their advantage.

The Rwandan side will know that their Champions League hopes remain alive, but a stronger performance in front of goal will be essential if they are to turn the tie around.

Zamalek, on the other hand, will seek to build on their late success and finish the job on home ground.

With only one goal separating the teams, the contest remains open, but the Egyptian giants have given themselves the advantage after striking at a critical moment in Kigali.
