Egyptian giants Zamalek have reportedly threatened to withdraw from the upcoming CAF Champions League if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approves a proposed expansion of the competition that would allow arch-rivals Al Ahly to participate.
According to reports, the Cairo club is opposed to any changes that could create an additional route into Africa’s premier club competition for Al Ahly, arguing that such a move would compromise the existing qualification system.
Zamalek oppose reported expansion plans
Reports suggest Zamalek believe increasing the number of participating teams to accommodate Al Ahly would be unfair to clubs that qualified through the established sporting criteria.
The White Knights are said to have made their position clear, warning they could consider withdrawing from the tournament should CAF proceed with the reported proposal.
The issue has intensified because of the fierce rivalry between Egypt’s two most successful clubs, whose battles for domestic and continental honours have defined African football for decades.
CAF yet to confirm any changes
Despite the growing speculation, CAF has not officially announced any expansion of the Champions League or confirmed that Al Ahly will receive a place outside the normal qualification process.
As a result, the reported threat from Zamalek remains based on proposals and speculation rather than an official CAF decision.
Should CAF decide to alter the tournament format, any announcement is likely to attract significant attention across the continent, particularly if it affects qualification criteria.
Historic rivalry adds to tension
Zamalek and Al Ahly remain two of Africa’s most decorated clubs, with both boasting rich histories in the CAF Champions League.
