Zamalek face familiar rivals and new challenge in CAF Champions League draw

Zamalek have been drawn against Tunisia’s Club Africain, Algeria’s MC Alger and Tanzania’s Young Africans in Group B of the 2027 CAF Champions League, setting up a campaign that will reunite the Egyptian side with two familiar continental opponents while introducing a new rivalry.

The draw has brought back memories of previous meetings for the Egyptian club, with a mixed record against Club Africain and a more favourable history against MC Alger. Their matches against Young Africans, meanwhile, will mark the first meetings between the two teams.

The group presents Zamalek with a combination of familiar challenges and an unfamiliar opponent as they seek to progress to the next round of Africa’s leading club competition.

Club Africain renew rivalry with Zamalek

Club Africain are among the opponents with whom Zamalek have a significant history in continental football, although their previous meetings have produced contrasting results.

The two sides have played four times, with Zamalek recording two victories and suffering two defeats. None of those matches ended in a draw, leaving the overall record evenly balanced.

Their first encounters came during the group stage of the 1997 competition. Zamalek lost the opening match 2-0 before responding with a 2-0 victory in the return fixture, ensuring that both teams finished that pair of meetings with a win.

The clubs met again in the first preliminary round in 2011. Zamalek suffered a 4-2 defeat in the first leg, leaving them with work to do in the return match.

The Egyptian side responded by winning the second leg 2-1. However, the results once again demonstrated how closely contested the encounters between the two clubs have been over the years.

Their upcoming meetings in Group B will provide another opportunity for Zamalek to improve their record against the Tunisian side.

MC Alger offer a more positive historical record

Zamalek’s previous encounters with MC Alger have been less extensive, but the Egyptian club have avoided defeat in their two meetings.

Both matches took place during the group stage of the 2021 CAF Champions League. The first ended in a goalless draw, with neither side able to find a breakthrough.

Zamalek then secured a 2-0 victory in the second meeting, finishing their previous record against the Algerian club with one win and one draw.

That history gives the Cairo-based side a more encouraging starting point ahead of their next meetings, although the previous results will not determine the outcome of the new group-stage campaign.

The return of the fixture also adds another familiar contest to a group in which Zamalek will need to navigate opponents with different records against them.

Young Africans present an unfamiliar test

Young Africans represent a different proposition because Zamalek have never faced the Tanzanian club in a competitive encounter, according to the available head-to-head record.

The group-stage fixtures will therefore begin a new chapter between the two sides, with neither team able to draw on previous direct meetings when preparing for the contest.

For Zamalek, the matches will offer an opportunity to establish an early record against their Tanzanian opponents while pursuing qualification for the next stage of the competition.

The overall figures from Zamalek’s previous matches against the other two group opponents underline the challenge ahead. Excluding Young Africans, the Egyptian side have played six games against their Group B rivals, winning three, drawing one and losing two.

Zamalek scored eight goals across those matches but conceded nine, leaving them with a slightly negative goal difference despite winning half of the encounters.

Those figures highlight the mixed nature of their previous experiences against Club Africain and MC Alger. With Young Africans adding an entirely new matchup to the group, Zamalek’s progress will depend on how effectively they turn their historical experience into results in the 2027 campaign.
