Zamalek delay talks as Abdel-Maguid attracts overseas attention

Zamalek are assessing their next move regarding defender Hossam Abdel-Maguid, with the club developing two potential strategies as uncertainty surrounds his long-term future.

A source within the club has indicated that Abdel-Maguid, whose contract is due to expire at the end of next season, remains a key figure in the squad. However, growing interest from European sides has complicated negotiations over a possible extension.

According to the source, Zamalek’s first option is to reopen discussions with the player over a new contract. Should an agreement be reached, the club would then consider offers for his transfer only if the player expresses a desire to leave. The alternative approach would be triggered if Abdel-Maguid declines to renew, in which case Zamalek would look to secure the highest possible transfer fee.

“There is real interest from some clubs in signing the player, the latest of which were Anderlecht of Belgium and West Bromwich Albion, which plays in the English First Division,” the source said.

Despite this interest, no formal offers have yet been submitted. Instead, intermediaries have made initial enquiries regarding the possibility of a transfer.

“Zamalek did not receive official offers to sign the player from the two clubs, but inquiries were made by some intermediaries to the White Castle regarding matters related to the possibility of letting go of the player,” the source added.

The club’s financial situation is also influencing its thinking. Any potential transfer could help address outstanding obligations that have impacted Zamalek’s ability to register players.

“If Hossam Abdel-Maguid insists on leaving, Zamalek will seek to reach the highest financial value that will help it pay the dues that caused the suspension of registration by the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” the source explained.

Fixture congestion stalls negotiations

For now, contract discussions have been put on hold as the team focuses on its immediate competitive priorities.

“The tight time frame and the team’s presence in fierce competition for the league title, in addition to its qualification for the Confederation Cup final, hinders the idea of negotiating with the player at the moment to extend his contract for another period,” the source said.

Zamalek are currently engaged in a decisive phase of their domestic campaign while also preparing for a continental final, leaving little room for off-field negotiations.

“Zamalek will not object to letting go of the player, but will not accept discussing any offer at the present time and until the end of the league and Confederation Cup competitions,” the source added.

Focus shifts to crucial fixtures

Meanwhile, the squad has been granted a brief respite following their progress in Africa. Head coach Moataz Gamal has given players a day off after their goalless draw against CR Belouizdad, a result that secured their place in the African Confederation Cup final thanks to a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Training is set to resume on Sunday as preparations begin for a decisive league encounter against Pyramids at Cairo International Stadium next Thursday.

Zamalek now await the outcome of the semi-final clash between Morocco’s Olympique Safi and Algeria’s USM Alger to determine their opponent in the Confederation Cup final.

Balancing ambition and uncertainty

Zamalek’s handling of Abdel-Maguid’s situation reflects a broader balancing act between maintaining competitive momentum and planning for the future. With major fixtures on the horizon and external interest intensifying, the club’s eventual decision could prove pivotal both on and off the pitch.
