Zamalek SC will head into one of the most important matches of their season on Saturday evening as they attempt to overturn a first-leg defeat against USM Alger and secure the CAF Confederation Cup title.
The Egyptian side are preparing for a decisive second-leg encounter at Cairo International Stadium, where they must recover from a 1-0 loss suffered in Algeria last weekend.
Zamalek now require a victory by at least two goals, such as 2-0 or 3-1, to claim the continental trophy in front of their supporters.
The final represents more than simply a chance to lift silverware. For the club, the match carries financial significance, historical importance and the possibility of achieving several notable milestones at both club and individual level.
One of Zamalek’s primary objectives is to secure the Confederation Cup for a third time in their history after previously winning the competition in 2019 and 2024.
Victory would also bring a major financial reward, with the club aiming to secure the tournament’s reported $4 million prize fund.
The White Knights are equally focused on strengthening their standing in African football history. Winning the title would increase the club’s tally of continental honours to 16, further reinforcing Zamalek’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful sides.
A triumph would also place the Egyptian club alongside RS Berkane and CS Sfaxien as the joint most successful teams in the Confederation Cup’s current format, which has existed since 2004.
For the club’s leadership, the final is also viewed as an opportunity to continue a successful period under the current administration headed by Hussein Labib.
Since taking charge, the board has overseen three major trophies: the 2024 Confederation Cup, the 2024 African Super Cup and the 2025 Egypt Cup. Another continental title would further strengthen the board’s achievements during its tenure.
The final could also prove historically significant for coach Moataz Gamal.
Should Zamalek complete the comeback and win the competition, Gamal would become only the fourth Egyptian coach to guide the club to a continental title, joining the likes of Mahmoud Abu Regaila, Mahmoud El Gohary and Essam Bahig.
In addition, he would make history as the first Egyptian manager ever to win the CAF Confederation Cup title under its current structure.
Previous victories in the competition for Egyptian clubs came under foreign coaches, with Al Ahly winning with Garrido in 2014, while Zamalek claimed the title with Christian Gross in 2019 and Gomez in 2024.
Saturday’s match is therefore expected to carry enormous pressure and expectation for the Cairo club, who must produce a strong response after the disappointment of the first leg.
The encounter at Cairo International Stadium is scheduled to kick off at 9pm local time, with supporters hoping the White Knights can deliver another memorable night in African competition and keep alive their pursuit of continental history.
