Zamalek adjust preparations after league postpones key fixture

Schedule changes made to accommodate Egypt’s World Cup preparations

Zamalek have altered their training schedule in response to a decision by the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association to revise the domestic league calendar, as preparations begin for the national team’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

The association confirmed that matches in the championship qualifying stage will now conclude on 15 May, allowing the Egyptian national team to assemble earlier than planned. The move is intended to provide sufficient time for preparations ahead of upcoming international commitments.

As part of the revised schedule, Zamalek’s fixture against Al-Masry in the opening round of the second phase of the Egyptian Premier League has been postponed from 3 April to 6 April.

Adjustment linked to international commitments

The decision to amend the fixture list follows the elimination of the clubs involved from African competitions. This has made it possible to release international players earlier, enabling them to join the national squad.

Egypt are set to face Spain in a friendly match on 31 March, a fixture that has influenced the timing of domestic matches and prompted broader scheduling changes.

Zamalek coaching staff respond with training delay

In reaction to the updated calendar, Zamalek’s technical staff, led by head coach Moataz Gamal, opted to delay the team’s return to group training.

Football director Abdel Nasser Mohamed confirmed that the squad’s training resumption has been postponed by 24 hours following the league’s decision. Players had originally been scheduled to return on Thursday, but training will now begin on Friday.

The session is set to take place at the Military Academy Stadium, as the team recalibrates its preparations ahead of the decisive phase of the season.

Focus shifts to decisive stage opener

Zamalek will face Al-Masry at 20:00 on Monday at the Army Stadium in Borg El Arab, in a match that marks the beginning of the league’s final stage to determine the champion.

The postponement offers the team additional time to prepare, although it also compresses the schedule in a critical period of the campaign.

Strong league form underpins title challenge

Zamalek currently lead the Egyptian Premier League standings with 43 points from 20 matches. Their record includes 13 wins, four draws and three defeats, placing them in a strong position heading into the championship-deciding phase.

Under Moataz Gamal, the team has shown consistent form, winning 11 of the 17 matches played during his tenure, alongside two draws and four losses. Their most recent setback came against Enppi in the final round of the regular season.

Momentum tested as decisive phase begins

Despite the recent defeat, Zamalek enter the final stage of the competition with momentum and a clear objective of securing the league title.

The adjustment to the schedule and the delayed return to training reflect the broader impact of international commitments on domestic football. For Zamalek, the immediate challenge will be to maintain their form and adapt quickly as the decisive phase of the season begins.

With the title race intensifying, their response to these changes could prove crucial in determining the outcome of the campaign.
