Ghanaian duo Caleb Yirenkyi and Thomas Asante were at the end of a 3-0 defeat in Coventry City’s return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
The Sky Blues, playing in England’s top division for the first time in a quarter of a century, were outplayed by Mikel Arteta’s side, who quickly established control and never allowed their visitors to build momentum.
For Coventry, the occasion also marked Premier League debuts for seven players, including record signing Caleb Yirenkyi and Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Yirenkyi, a Ghanaian midfielder signed from Nordsjlland for a club-record £26m, was selected by manager Frank Lampard to start in midfield for his first appearance in the competition.
Thomas-Asante was also included from the beginning after playing a significant role in Coventry’s promotion campaign last season. The forward scored 13 goals and provided four assists as the club secured their return to the top flight.
He started in a three-man attacking unit alongside Ellis Simms and Loum Tchaouna.
But Coventry were immediately placed under pressure by Arsenal, who dominated possession and created the majority of the early opportunities.
The home side took the lead in the 15th minute through Kai Havertz. The Germany international was in the right position to turn in a low delivery from Riccardo Calafiori, giving Arsenal an early advantage.
Seven minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead.
Bukayo Saka finished from close range after the ball reached him following a cross that had been diverted into his path by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
The two-goal advantage reflected Arsenal’s control of the match, with Coventry struggling to move the game into the home side’s defensive area.
Arsenal continued to dictate proceedings and added a third goal shortly after the restart. Martin Odegaard scored in the 49th minute to leave Coventry facing a three-goal deficit.
The statistics from the opening 45 minutes underlined just how one-sided the contest had been.
Arsenal recorded 23 touches inside Coventry’s penalty area during the first half, while Coventry failed to touch the ball once inside Arsenal’s box.
The visitors also did not make a single tackle during the opening period, further illustrating the extent of Arsenal’s dominance.
For Yirenkyi, the occasion proved particularly demanding. The 26-year-old midfielder, who had arrived as Coventry’s record signing, was unable to impose himself on a match controlled by Arsenal.
He was shown a yellow card for a foul on Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly and was later cautioned again for another poorly timed challenge.
Thomas-Asante had an opportunity to provide Coventry with a route back into the contest in the second half when his side appealed for a penalty, but the claim was rejected.
Despite the result, both Ghanaian players can take the experience of making their Premier League debuts into Coventry’s next matches.
For Yirenkyi, the game represented the first step in his attempt to justify the club-record investment made in him following his move from Nordsjlland.
Thomas-Asante, meanwhile, begins his Premier League career after helping Coventry secure promotion with an impressive contribution last season.
The defeat will not have been the introduction Coventry wanted after ending their long wait to return to the top flight. However, the club now have a full Premier League campaign ahead of them as they seek to establish themselves among England’s leading sides.
Lampard and his players will have to use the experience of the opening night as they prepare for the challenges that come with competing at the highest level.
For Yirenkyi and Thomas-Asante, their first taste of Premier League football ended in disappointment, but both now have the opportunity to build on the experience as Coventry begin their attempt to remain in the division.
