Yann Diomande has intensified the competition for a starting place on Real Madrid’s left wing after an impressive performance in their 4-1 victory over Sevilla in La Liga.
The young Ivory Coast forward took advantage of Vinicius Junior’s absence through suspension to deliver a standout display at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, giving coach Jose Mourinho another option in attack.
Vinicius was unavailable because of a four-match suspension, allowing Diomande to make the most of his opportunity. His performance has raised questions about the Brazilian’s place in the starting line-up, particularly given his struggles for consistency this season.
Diomande’s contribution against Sevilla was not limited to his attacking threat. His dribbling, passing and defensive work also demonstrated why he is increasingly being considered a serious contender for the position.
Diomande leads Vinicius in dribbling statistics
The statistics underline the Ivorian’s effectiveness when taking on opponents, despite having played almost 200 fewer minutes than Vinicius.
Diomande has attempted 45 dribbles, completing 30 of them, while Vinicius has attempted 38 and successfully completed 16. That gives the young forward a success rate of 67%, compared with 42% for his Brazilian team-mate.
His performance against Sevilla further highlighted his all-round contribution. Diomande recorded 86 touches, completed 18 passes in the final third and recovered possession four times.
Those figures reflect his influence in different areas of the pitch and strengthen his argument for more regular involvement in Mourinho’s plans.
Diomande joined Real Madrid from German club RB Leipzig in the summer of 2026 in a deal worth a guaranteed €125m, with a further €15m in potential bonuses linked to specific targets.
The size of the transfer fee has placed considerable expectations on the youngster, but his recent performances have begun to offer encouragement that he can justify the investment.
Mourinho warns Diomande against complacency
Despite the praise following the Sevilla victory, Mourinho has sought to keep expectations in check, pointing to areas where the young forward still needs to improve.
“He still has a lot to improve on,” Mourinho said in a press conference after the win against Sevilla. “He is young and a bit naive, and he is still an incomplete player. The demands here are very high, but he played a great game nonetheless.”
The Portuguese coach believes Diomande must become more composed in front of goal, particularly when opportunities arise in dangerous areas.
Mourinho explained that the forward can find himself in promising positions but sometimes struggles to make the right decision in the final moments. He wants the youngster to remain calm, raise his head and identify the best option, including whether a team-mate is better placed to receive the ball.
The manager also drew comparisons with Vinicius, recalling how the Brazilian arrived at Real Madrid before developing into a top-level player three years later.
The comparison suggests Mourinho sees considerable potential in Diomande but recognises that further development will be required before he reaches the level expected at the Spanish club.
Vinicius faces another opportunity
Vinicius is expected to return to action against Leipzig in the Champions League, giving the Brazilian an opportunity to re-establish himself after his suspension.
Diomande, meanwhile, could begin that match on the bench as Mourinho considers his options for the European fixture.
Attention will then turn to next Sunday’s Clasico against Barcelona, which could provide another important test for the Ivorian as he continues his push for a regular starting position.
His display against Sevilla has strengthened his claim, but the competition with Vinicius remains open. With the Brazilian expected to return, Diomande will need to maintain his form and demonstrate that his latest performance was more than an isolated success.
For Mourinho, the challenge will be managing two attacking options with the potential to make a difference, while ensuring the young Ivorian continues to develop under the pressure of playing for Real Madrid.
