Wydad Athletic Club are moving towards a coaching change, with Portuguese tactician Sergio Paulo reportedly set to leave the Moroccan giants and Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi emerging as a potential replacement.
According to reports from AfricaSoccer, Wydad president Ibrahim Al-Asri met Paulo on Tuesday morning, October 20, with both parties reaching an agreement to terminate their contract by mutual consent. However, other reports indicate that negotiations over the separation have faced complications, meaning the final arrangements remain unclear.
The Casablanca-based club are seeking a change in direction after a disappointing start to the season, with their early performances and results raising concerns among the club’s leadership.
Wydad have reportedly collected five points from their opening four league matches, leaving the management considering changes to the technical setup as it looks to improve the team’s fortunes.
Nabi among candidates
Former Raja Club Athletic coach Nasreddine Nabi is among the names linked with the Wydad job as the club assesses possible successors.
The Tunisian tactician has experience in African club football, including spells with AS FAR in Morocco and Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa. His familiarity with Moroccan football could make him an attractive option as Wydad look to stabilise their campaign.
Reports suggest that Nabi is being considered for the position, although Wydad have yet to officially announce a new head coach. Other names, including Alexandre Santos, have also been linked with the vacancy.
Nabi’s potential appointment would come amid another reported coaching transition in Moroccan football, following his departure from Raja after disagreements involving the club’s sporting management.
For now, Wydad’s immediate priority is to resolve Paulo’s situation and settle on a successor capable of improving the team’s performances.
Until the club makes an official announcement, Nabi remains a candidate rather than a confirmed appointment.
