Wydad close in on Portuguese coach Paulo Sergio

Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club are closing in on the appointment of experienced Portuguese coach Paulo Sergio as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.

African.Football understands that negotiations between Wydad and the 58-year-old tactician are at an advanced stage, with the former Al Akhdoud manager expected to sign a one-year contract.

If completed, the deal will mark Paulo Sergio’s first coaching role in African football after a managerial career spanning Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Experienced coach for rebuilding project

Wydad are seeking an experienced manager to lead the club through a rebuilding phase following a disappointing campaign.

Paulo Sergio arrives with a wealth of experience, having managed clubs in Portugal, Scotland, Romania, Cyprus, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and, most recently, Saudi Arabia.

His ability to adapt to different football cultures and build tactically disciplined teams is understood to have been a major factor in Wydad’s decision to pursue his appointment.

Pre-season focus

The Portuguese coach is expected to take charge of pre-season preparations immediately after his appointment is confirmed, allowing him to assess the current squad and identify priority areas for reinforcement before the transfer window closes.

He is also expected to play a key role in shaping Wydad’s recruitment strategy by working closely with the club’s sporting department to identify players suited to his tactical approach.
