Werder suffer 7-0 friendly defeat by Twente during international break

Werder were thrashed 7-0 by Twente in a one-sided friendly played during the international break.

The German side’s difficult afternoon began after goalkeeper Markus Kolke failed to control a back-pass from Amos Pieper in the fifth minute. Kolke then brought down Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink inside the penalty area, giving Twente a penalty.

Despite injuries and the absence of players away on international duty, Werder still fielded six members of their first-team squad.

One of them, forward Niclas Fullkrug, was unable to hide his frustration after one of Twente’s goals. He shouted across the pitch: “This is absolute madness!”

The heavy defeat came in a match arranged during the break in domestic competition. Twente went on to score seven times without reply, leaving Werder with little to celebrate from the fixture.

Werder’s next match is away to Borussia Dortmund on 9 October. Borussia Dortmund have won all of their matches this season.

Werder currently sit eighth in the table with seven points.
