WAFCON 2026: Robyn and Moodaly-Salgado make history as first married couple to play together

South Africa’s Robyn Moodaly and Gabriela Salgado-Moodaly have created history at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after becoming the first married couple to feature in the same match at the continental tournament.

The milestone was achieved during Banyana Banyana’s opening Group B fixture against Tanzania at the 2026 WAFCON in Casablanca, where the pair came on as substitutes to represent South Africa together on one of African women’s football’s biggest stages.

The appearance marked a significant moment for both players, who are familiar with sharing the pitch at club level but reached a new milestone by doing so in an official international competition.

The South African duo, who play together for JWV FC, have continued their football partnership after getting married in 2025.

Their involvement in the tournament opener added another chapter to a journey that combines their personal relationship with their shared passion for the sport.

Although the historic appearance provided a positive moment for the pair, it came on a difficult night for Banyana Banyana, who suffered a 2-1 defeat against Tanzania in their opening Group B match.

The result was disappointing for the 2022 African champions, but the participation of Moodaly and Salgado-Moodaly highlighted the changing landscape of women’s football on the continent.

Their achievement represents a growing recognition of the personal stories and diverse experiences that continue to shape the women’s game in Africa. Beyond the result on the pitch, their appearance together showed the connection between professional football and personal commitment.

Both players have been important figures within the South African women’s national team setup and were part of a squad aiming to make a strong start to the tournament.

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations brings together the continent’s best teams, with South Africa entering the competition looking to reclaim the title after finishing fourth in the previous edition.

For Robyn and Gabriela, however, the opening match will be remembered for a reason beyond the final score.

Their shared appearance has secured a place in WAFCON history as the first time a married couple has played in the same match at the tournament.

Their story adds a unique dimension to African football’s growing list of memorable moments, with the Moodaly-Salgado partnership now permanently linked to the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
