Vladimir Petkovic has told members of his coaching staff that his time in charge of Algeria is coming to an end, according to reports, with an official announcement expected in the coming period.
The Swiss manager is understood to be nearing the end of his spell with the “Desert Warriors”, paving the way for a new phase under a different head coach. However, the Algerian Football Federation has yet to confirm Petkovic’s departure or announce who could replace him.
Algerian journalist Mohamed Al-Wadahi, who works for Qatar-based broadcaster beIN Sports, reported the development in a post on his official Facebook account.
Al-Wadahi said Petkovic had informed members of his technical team that his assignment with Algeria had reached its conclusion. He added that the separation between the coach and the Algerian Football Federation would be completed by mutual consent, with the formal announcement still to come.
His comments followed several days of reports suggesting there had been serious disagreements between Petkovic and the federation, including claims of attempts by both sides to exert pressure during negotiations. Al-Wadahi said those reports were inaccurate.
Instead, he said, Petkovic and the federation had reached an amicable agreement to end their contract. The arrangement was described as a quiet resolution without a major dispute or significant financial demands, allowing both parties to part on good terms.
The identity of Algeria’s next manager remains unknown, although Al-Wadahi said a coach from the Spanish school of football appeared to be the leading possibility for the role.
Algerian commentator Hafid Derradji also reported that Petkovic had told his assistants that his journey with the national team was over. Derradji wrote: “Petkovic informed his assistants that his journey with the Algerian national team had ended, and that he would not continue leading the Fennecs, after reaching a mutual agreement with the president of the Algerian Football Federation.”
The Algerian Football Federation’s official statement will determine whether the reports are confirmed, both in relation to Petkovic’s departure and the identity of the manager who will oversee the team in its upcoming commitments.
Petkovic took charge of Algeria as the national side prepared for a new stage, but his reported exit would now bring his tenure to a close before the federation publicly outlines its plans. For now, the reported agreement remains subject to formal confirmation, while attention turns to whether the next appointment will come from Spain.
