Spanish journalist Roberto Gomez has dismissed the prospect of Vinicius Junior leaving Real Madrid, describing any departure for the Brazil forward as “the shock of the century” amid growing uncertainty over his future.
Speaking on Spanish radio station Radio Marca on Monday, Gomez said the 25-year-old was central to Real Madrid’s team and argued that losing him would represent a serious blow to the club.
“Vinicius is Real Madrid’s best player at the moment. There is nobody on the wing who plays like him with that talent and influence. I cannot even imagine him leaving now; he represents the team’s attacking spirit,” Gomez said.
His comments come as debate continues over whether Vinicius Junior will agree a new contract with Real Madrid. The player is approaching the final year of his current deal, a situation that has fuelled speculation about his next move.
Reports in the Spanish media remain divided. Some outlets say negotiations are under way over an extension, while others have reported interest from major European clubs, particularly those in the Premier League.
Gomez questioned whether any club would be prepared to meet the financial demands involved in signing a player with only one year remaining on his contract.
“Who is going to pay 150 or 200 million euros for a player who has only one year left on his contract? It does not make sense economically or from a sporting point of view,” he said.
The journalist also argued that Real Madrid would have little power to force a transfer if Vinicius made clear that he wanted to remain at the club.
“And if Vinicius says clearly: ‘I am staying here’, what will the club do? Will it force him to leave? That is completely impossible,” Gomez added.
Vinicius joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018 and has become one of the defining attacking players in the club’s squad, although no further details about his contract negotiations were provided in the comments reported by Radio Marca.
Gomez concluded by stressing the importance of the relationship between the player and the Spanish club.
“How can Vinicius leave Real Madrid? For me, it would be the shock of the century by every measure. Real Madrid urgently needs Vinicius, and Vinicius needs Real Madrid. This is a relationship that cannot be ended easily,” he said.
The uncertainty surrounding the Brazil international has therefore continued despite the strength of Gomez’s assessment. While some reports point towards a possible agreement to renew his contract, other reports maintain that leading European clubs are monitoring the situation, leaving his long-term position at Real Madrid the subject of continued speculation.
