Malian youth international defender Tiémoko Berthé has joined Villarreal after signing a five-year contract with the Spanish club, marking another important step in his development.
The 18-year-old centre-back moves to Villarreal from Mali’s Académie des Étoiles du Mandé, where he developed before earning recognition at international level.
Standing at 1.96m, Berthé has been identified as one of the promising young defenders emerging from Malian football. His move to Spain will give him the opportunity to continue his development within Villarreal’s system.
Berthé, known by the nickname “Blaki”, was part of the Mali side that finished as runners-up at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2025.
The transfer also highlights the growing relationship between the Académie des Étoiles du Mandé and Villarreal, with the partnership helping young Malian players gain opportunities to continue their careers in Europe.
Berthé said the presence of fellow Malians at Villarreal had also helped create a sense of familiarity as he begins life in Spain.
“Yes, of course, several of my compatriots play here. I think everyone has their own ambitions and plans. I’m here too; it’s family, we’re here just like we are in Mali. Truly, thanks to this partnership, many young players have had the opportunity to sign professional contracts.
“I want to thank the entire team at the Étoiles du Mandé Academy, and I dream of creating my own story at Villarreal, God willing.”
The defender’s move is another significant milestone for the Étoiles du Mandé academy, which has become an important part of his football education.
For Berthé, the immediate priority will be to adapt to Spanish football and continue developing the technical and tactical aspects of his game.
His physical profile is already notable. At 1.96m, the centre-back possesses the height expected of a modern central defender, while his experience with Mali’s youth national teams has provided him with exposure to international competition.
His appearance at the 2025 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations was particularly important in his development. Mali reached the final of the competition in Morocco, giving Berthé valuable experience at continental level.
He has now moved from the academy environment in Mali to one of Spain’s established football clubs, giving him a new platform from which to pursue his ambitions.
The transfer was facilitated by his representatives, Mohamed Doucoure and Eduardo Marinho of Astro Sports.
The agreement runs for five years, signalling Villarreal’s long-term interest in the young defender rather than simply providing him with a short-term opportunity.
Berthé’s arrival also comes as he continues to feature in Mali’s plans at youth level. He was pre-selected for the WAFU A Under-20 tournament scheduled to take place in Bamako in 2026.
That means the defender begins his Villarreal chapter while remaining connected to Mali’s youth setup.
The move is therefore significant not only for Berthé but also for the academy that helped develop him.
His progression from the Étoiles du Mandé to Villarreal offers another example of a young African player using academy football and international youth competition as a pathway towards Europe.
