Shaqueel van Persie has confirmed he has yet to decide whether to represent Morocco or the Netherlands at senior international level, insisting his eventual choice will be guided by “the heart”.
The 19-year-old Feyenoord forward, son of former Netherlands captain Robin van Persie, is eligible for both countries and has so far kept his options open, despite having already played for the Netherlands at Under-17 level.
In an interview with Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, Shaqueel van Persie addressed recent speculation suggesting he had already opted to play for Morocco, whose senior side are nicknamed the Lions of the Atlas. He denied that any decision had been made and stressed that his mind is not yet made up.
Torn between two national teams
Van Persie, who was born in London, has only a remote chance of representing England and is therefore effectively choosing between the country of his father and that of his mother, who is Moroccan.
The striker admitted he feels pulled in both directions by his dual heritage and described his current state as a genuine dilemma, emphasising that whichever side he chooses will be determined by emotion as much as by footballing considerations.
Last season, Van Persie made seven appearances for Feyenoord under the management of his father, scoring two goals and providing two assists. Despite his limited first-team experience so far, his international future has become a subject of growing interest in both Morocco and the Netherlands, given his family name and his early progress.
International implications
At youth level, Van Persie has already worn the Oranje shirt with the Netherlands U17s, but those appearances do not tie him to the Dutch senior side. Morocco have been actively recruiting dual-nationality players in recent years, particularly from European leagues, and the competition for Van Persie’s allegiance reflects that broader strategy.
Morocco and the Netherlands recently met in the last 16 of the most recent World Cup, with the North Africans progressing on penalties after a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 shootout win on 30 June. That result underlined Morocco’s growing stature on the international stage and may form part of the context around Van Persie’s decision.
If he chooses Morocco, Van Persie would be following in the footsteps of several high-profile players who also had the option to play for the Netherlands before committing to the North African nation. Established senior figures such as Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui and Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat both opted for Morocco despite Dutch connections.
He would also be aligning himself with younger talents in the Moroccan set-up, including U23 prospect Abdellah Ouazane, who became an African champion at U17 level last year and is regarded as one of the country’s rising stars.
No timetable for a decision
Van Persie has not set a public deadline for choosing his national team and has not given any indication that talks with either federation are at an advanced stage. For now, he appears focused on his club development at Feyenoord while acknowledging the weight of the decision ahead.
Both the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) are expected to monitor his progress closely as he continues his early senior career under the guidance of his father in Rotterdam.
While he has now broken his silence to address the rumours, the teenager’s international future remains open – and his eventual decision is likely to attract significant attention in both Amsterdam and Rabat.
