Thomas-Asante Calls Ghana Call-Up “Biggest Privilege”

Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has spoken of his pride and emotion at representing Ghana, describing his international career as the realisation of a childhood ambition as the national team continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Brandon Thomas-Asante, who plays for Coventry City, has recently been involved in Ghana’s training camp in Cardiff as the squad builds towards the tournament in North America. The striker says being part of the Black Stars setup is one of the most significant achievements of his career so far.

Ghana’s preparations have gathered pace in Wales, where head coach Carlos Queiroz is assessing his options ahead of the World Cup. Thomas-Asante is among the players currently competing for a place in the final squad as the team prepares for a series of important fixtures and training sessions.

For the 26-year-old forward, the opportunity to represent Ghana carries deep personal meaning. Having grown up dreaming of international football, he says the moment he joined the national team remains emotional and fulfilling.

“It’s always the biggest privilege,” he said while reflecting on his rise to the Black Stars setup.

Thomas-Asante also revealed that the ambition of playing for Ghana was something he carried from childhood, long before his professional breakthrough in English football. He described how his early experiences of football were shaped by hope and belief that he would one day represent the country of his heritage on the international stage.

“I think it’s something that, since I was young, when I was going to the games, I used to pray, believe and dream of achieving one day,” he added.

His journey to the national team has been built on steady progress through the English football system, where consistent performances eventually earned him recognition at international level. That development has now culminated in his involvement with a Ghana squad preparing for one of the most significant tournaments in world football.

Thomas-Asante admitted that the experience still feels remarkable, particularly as Ghana’s World Cup campaign draws closer.

“Now, to be here is incredible. To be able to prepare for the World Cup is something that, as I say, I’ve been praying for since I was a child,” he stated.

The Black Stars are currently based at Dragon Park in Wales as they continue training ahead of their friendly against Wales on Tuesday. The camp has also been strengthened by the arrival of several players, including Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Kamal Deen Sulemana, and Abdul Mumin, increasing competition for places in the squad.

Despite the intense competition, the atmosphere within the group remains focused as players aim to impress ahead of final squad selection. Ghana are using this period to sharpen their preparations before heading to North America for the tournament.

At the World Cup, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, Croatia and England, setting up a challenging group stage campaign for the four-time African champions.
