Former France international Samir Nasri has criticised CAF for their decision to overturn the result of the 2025 AFCON in a strongly worded remarks, accusing them of mishandling the announcement of the winner.
Nasri questioned the timing and credibility of the decision, suggesting that the situation had become farcical.
His comments centred on the apparent confusion surrounding the awarding of the trophy, which he implied had already been celebrated by Senegal before any official clarity was provided.
“Next time, they might as well announce it in 2035 too. This is nonsense,” Nasri said, expressing frustration at what he sees as a delayed or poorly managed process.
The controversy involve the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the governing body responsible for football across the continent, handing Morocco the title after an appeal was upheld, citing Article 84.
Nasri accused the organisation of undermining its own credibility through the handling of the situation.
According to his remarks, players from Senegal had already begun celebrating with the trophy, suggesting that, from their perspective, the outcome had been decided.
“The Senegal players already went home with the trophy to celebrate! So what do we do now? Give the trophy to Morocco?” he added, highlighting what he sees as the absurdity of the situation.
Nasri’s comments reflect wider concerns about governance and decision-making processes within major sporting organisations, particularly when outcomes are not communicated clearly or consistently.
He concluded with a sharp criticism of CAF, stating: “Confederation of African Football is making a complete fool of itself!”
The situation has drawn attention to how governing bodies manage tournament outcomes and the potential consequences when processes are perceived to fall short.
The remarks have since circulated widely, adding to scrutiny of how decisions are made and communicated in African football competitions.
