Lamine Yamal has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a hamstring injury, dealing a significant blow to FC Barcelona as they approach the final stretch of their domestic campaign.
The Spanish champions confirmed the extent of the injury in an official statement on Thursday, following the winger’s withdrawal during their recent match against Celta Vigo. Medical examinations revealed a tear in the hamstring of his left leg, ruling him out of action for the rest of the 2025–2026 season.
In the statement, the club said: “Medical tests carried out on the player revealed a tear in the hamstring of his left leg. He will undergo a conservative treatment program and will miss the rest of the season, but he is expected to be ready to participate in the World Cup.”
Injury comes at pivotal moment
Yamal’s absence arrives at a crucial juncture for Barcelona, who are on the verge of securing the La Liga title. The club currently hold a nine-point advantage over Real Madrid with six matches remaining, placing them in a strong position to lift the trophy.
However, their European ambitions have already come to an end after a quarter-final exit from the UEFA Champions League, where they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate by Atlético Madrid.
The timing of Yamal’s injury is particularly unfortunate, as it coincides with preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada between June and July.
Yamal expresses disappointment
The 18-year-old forward addressed fans directly through a message shared on social media, expressing his frustration at being sidelined during a decisive phase of the season.
“This injury keeps me off the field at a time when I wanted to participate more than ever. This hurts me more than I can describe.”
He added: “It pains me that I cannot fight alongside my teammates, nor help when the team needs me, but I believe in them, and I know that they will give their all in every match.”
Despite the setback, Yamal emphasised his continued support for the squad and his determination to return stronger.
“I will be there even from outside the field, supporting, encouraging and pushing them forward like any one of them. This is not the end, just a temporary pause. I will come back stronger, with more enthusiasm than ever, and next season will be better.”
Incident during Celta Vigo match
The injury occurred during Barcelona’s victory over Celta Vigo at Camp Nou, where Yamal had earlier made a decisive contribution by converting a penalty late in the first half.
Moments after celebrating with teammates, the teenager went down injured, prompting immediate concern from the bench. Head coach Hansi Flick opted to substitute him as a precaution, though subsequent assessments confirmed a more serious issue.
Focus shifts to recovery and international stage
While Barcelona appear well-positioned to complete a successful domestic campaign, Yamal’s absence removes one of their key attacking options during the run-in.
Attention will now turn to his rehabilitation, with the club expressing confidence that he will recover in time for the World Cup. For Spain, the young forward remains an important figure as they seek to add to their only World Cup triumph, achieved in 2010.
