Barcelona will travel to England on Monday for a pre-season training camp at St George’s Park with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim all named in Hansi Flick’s touring squad, despite uncertainty over the goalkeeper’s future and the Dutch midfielder’s knee problem.
The 2026-27 preparations move into their second phase for the Catalan club with a trip to the headquarters of the England national team, where the squad will stay until 3 August under their new German head coach.
Flick announced his official travelling party before the team’s departure. Ter Stegen, whose proposed move to Ajax has not yet been finalised, is included, as is De Jong, who is still managing a knee injury but will continue his build-up with the group.
Recent signing Karim Adeyemi, whose arrival was confirmed last week, is also in the squad after taking part in his first training session with Barcelona on Friday morning. Brazilian winger Raphinha is expected to join up with the camp on Wednesday.
Youngsters retained as Flick delays first cuts
A number of academy players who began pre-season with the first team have been kept on for the England leg of preparations, with Hamza Abdelkarim among the most prominent of the youngsters.
Flick is set to use the stay at St George’s Park to continue assessing those emerging talents and, as a result, has postponed making his first major decisions on who will be cut from the senior group for several more days.
World Cup winners granted extended rest
Barcelona will be without several key players in England after their involvement at the recent World Cup.
The Spain contingent who lifted the trophy – Juan Garcia, Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal – will not take part in the camp and have instead been given permission to rest until mid-August, around 10 days before competitive fixtures get under way.
Also absent are semi-finalists Jules Kounde (France) and Anthony Gordon (England), who have received the same extended break. Other Barcelona players who featured at the tournament but did not reach the final stages will report back to pre-season once their shorter holiday periods finish.
Two friendlies scheduled in England
During their stay, Barcelona are set to play two warm-up matches on English soil.
They will face Birmingham City on Friday, before taking on Championship side Preston North End on Monday, 3 August, in what will be their final game of the camp ahead of returning to Spain.
Last week, Barcelona completed an initial two-week block of intensive training at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. That period concluded with a 4-1 friendly victory over CE Europa, after which the focus shifted to this higher-intensity phase in England as the club looks to position itself for a renewed push for domestic and European honours in the coming season.
