Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after a heavy collision with Andorra goalkeeper Uno during the final moments of their Spanish second-division match.
The game was suspended at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium after De Miguel was knocked unconscious in the incident, which occurred in second-half stoppage time with the score level at 2-2.
De Miguel had chased an aerial ball beyond the halfway line when Uno came out of his goal to clear it. The goalkeeper’s forceful challenge resulted in a serious collision, leaving the Tenerife striker motionless on the pitch.
Players from both sides immediately called for urgent medical attention as concern spread among those inside the stadium. Referee Manuel Angel Perez Hernandez sent Uno off during the incident.
Medical staff spent more than five minutes treating De Miguel on the pitch while the stadium fell silent. He was then carried away on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance equipped with the necessary medical equipment.
Given the severity of the situation, the referee stopped the match and informed both captains and coaching teams that play would not continue. De Miguel’s condition became the immediate priority, overtaking the result and the remainder of the fixture.
Uno, who had been leaving the pitch after receiving his red card, later returned to check on De Miguel. Tenerife officials and several of the striker’s team-mates gathered near the ambulance, visibly distressed by what had happened.
De Miguel remains in hospital
Reports after the collision said De Miguel had suffered a cardiac arrest because of the impact. Medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation inside the ambulance in an attempt to revive him.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the intervention restored the player’s pulse and his condition initially stabilised. He began breathing independently, although he remained unconscious.
The ambulance then left the stadium for Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria University Hospital, commonly known as La Candelaria Hospital, with medical staff accompanying him. He was taken there for further examinations and continued monitoring.
The latest reports indicated a slight improvement, with De Miguel breathing normally after being resuscitated by paramedics. However, he remained unconscious and under hospital care while doctors awaited the results of further tests and a medical report on his condition.
Spanish newspaper Marca also reported on the distressing incident, which transformed the closing stages of the match into an anxious wait for news of the Tenerife forward. Players, coaches, club officials and supporters were left hoping for confirmation that De Miguel was safe.
