Tamer Abdel Hamid backs Hossam Hassan and predicts Egypt’s World Cup goalkeeping hierarchy

Former Zamalek SC midfielder Tamer Abdel Hamid has defended the decision-making authority of Egypt’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that final squad selection belongs solely to head coach Hossam Hassan and his technical team.

Speaking on the Al-Mehwar Stadium programme, Abdel Hamid stressed the importance of offering psychological and moral support to players during difficult periods rather than increasing pressure through criticism.

The former midfielder praised Hossam Hassan for what he described as the coach’s efforts to stand behind struggling players in recent months. He pointed to defender Mohamed Abdel Moneim, who continued receiving encouragement despite limited playing time, as well as midfielder Imam Ashour during a period of inconsistent form.

However, Abdel Hamid suggested that striker Mostafa Mohamed should also have received similar support during tougher moments.

Discussing the goalkeeping situation, the former Zamalek player expressed confidence that Mostafa Shobeir is gradually establishing himself as Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the World Cup, citing the goalkeeper’s recent performances as proof of his growing importance within the national setup.

Abdel Hamid also predicted that Mohamed Alaa could be the goalkeeper left out when Egypt finalise their squad for the tournament.

Egypt national football team have been drawn in Group G for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Belgium national football team, New Zealand national football team and Iran national football team.
