Super Eagles defender Onyemaechi welcomes first child

Nigeria international Bruno Onyemaechi has announced the birth of his first child with his Portuguese partner, Ines Fontes, marking a significant personal milestone during an active period in his football career.

The 26-year-old defender, who represents the Super Eagles, shared his joy on social media after his partner gave birth on Saturday. The footballer reposted an image of himself holding the newborn, accompanied by the caption, “Best gift ever.”

Images shared online showed Onyemaechi alongside Fontes at the hospital shortly after the birth. As of the time of reporting, the couple have not publicly disclosed the gender of the child.

The couple have been in a relationship since 2022, during Onyemaechi’s time at Portuguese club Boavista. Fontes, a content creator, has frequently been seen supporting the defender throughout his career, regularly attending matches and sharing moments from their relationship online.

Earlier this month, the couple revealed they were expecting a child, with Fontes posting photos of her baby bump alongside Onyemaechi. The announcement was met with congratulatory messages from fans and followers.

The timing of the birth appears to explain Onyemaechi’s recent absence from the Nigerian national team camp. His departure had raised questions ahead of the team’s upcoming fixture against Jordan, but the hospital images have now confirmed he left to be with his partner for the delivery.

It remains unclear whether Onyemaechi will return in time to feature in the match. Players are typically granted short leave following the birth of a child, making his participation uncertain.

Head coach Eric Chelle is expected to rely on alternative options if the defender is unavailable. Left-back Zaidu Sanusi is fit and available, providing cover in Onyemaechi’s absence.

While Sanusi offers a different style of play, he is regarded as capable of stepping in and delivering a solid performance if called upon.

For Onyemaechi, however, attention is likely to remain focused on his growing family. His social media posts suggest the defender is relishing the moment, describing the newborn as the greatest gift he has received.
