Super Eagles arrive in Russia ahead of friendly

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have arrived in Russia and begun preparations for their international friendly against the Russian national team in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

The match will be played at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on 6 October 2026 as part of the October international window, giving head coach Eric Chelle another opportunity to assess his players.

The friendly comes after Nigeria’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and provides Chelle with another chance to examine his options before competitive fixtures resume.

The Nigerian delegation left Abuja on Thursday and reached Nizhny Novgorod International Airport on Friday before beginning preparations for the match.

Some of the players selected from the Nigeria Premier Football League were reported to have travelled with the delegation, while several foreign-based members of the squad were expected to make their way to Russia directly from their clubs.

Once in Nizhny Novgorod, the Super Eagles turned their attention to training as they began their build-up to Tuesday’s encounter.

The sessions are expected to be important for Chelle and his coaching staff as they work on the team’s tactical approach, monitor the players’ physical condition and assess some of the newer members of the national-team set-up.

The Russia fixture comes at a significant point in Chelle’s time in charge as he continues to consider the options available to him within the Super Eagles squad.

Nigeria’s selection for the match has already undergone changes, with Wilfred Ndidi and Victory Akpe withdrawing from the original squad.

Vince Osuji and John Otomewo were subsequently called up as replacements, ensuring that Chelle had additional options ahead of the trip.

The squad also includes goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, along with defenders Benjamin Fredrick and Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Raphael Onyedika and Akor Adams are also part of the group selected for the international window, while Kelechi Iheanacho is travelling with the team for the friendly.

For some members of the squad, the match represents an opportunity to strengthen their claims for future international selection.

Chelle can use the fixture to examine players who have had fewer opportunities at international level and determine how they fit into his plans for the Super Eagles.

The encounter also offers Nigeria the chance to test different combinations against European opposition.

With the coaching staff continuing to assess the squad, training in Russia will allow Chelle to work with the players ahead of the meeting with the hosts.

The sessions will also give the coaching team an opportunity to evaluate how the squad adapts to the tactical demands of the match and whether the selected players can work effectively together.

Nigeria’s arrival in Nizhny Novgorod marks the next stage of preparations after the team travelled from Abuja.

The Super Eagles will now continue training before facing Russia on Tuesday, with Chelle expected to use the fixture to gather further information about his squad.

The changes to the original selection have added new faces to the group, while established players such as Nwabali and Iheanacho provide experience alongside those seeking to establish themselves.

The friendly therefore has significance beyond the result, as Chelle continues to build his understanding of the players available to him.

Nigeria’s next test will come against Russia at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, where the Super Eagles will seek to make the most of an international fixture designed to assess their squad.

For Chelle, the match represents another opportunity to test tactics, give players valuable playing time and consider different combinations as he continues shaping his Nigeria team.

With preparations now under way in Russia, attention will turn to Tuesday’s meeting and how the Super Eagles respond to the challenge posed by the European side.
